Flanken Ribs

This is a post that I forgot to publish. Some months ago I was feeling adventurous and I made an order for flanken ribs. I have seen how these are cooked on Youtube.

I had no idea what to expect and this is how it looked like.

It was huge!

This is definitely a lot of meat for one person and this will last for many days.

They can't all fit into my baking pan, so some had to be cooked in the air fryer. I did not marinate the ribs and baked them in the oven for about 40 minutes at 200C.

It was unfortunate that the ribs were gamey and would have done better with marinade. But it was ok because I can handle gamey beef.

It took three batches to cook in the air fryer. I think it was something like 30 minutes (flipped at half time) at 200C.

Some of the ribs I ate for the day and the rest I put away in glass containers to store in the fridge.

I made Korean spring onion salad since I had a bountiful harvest of spring onions from my garden. I also had some store bought kimchi in the fridge.

The spring onion salad and kimchi helped to cut the meatiness and fattiness of the ribs. You may notice that this portion of ribs is rather fatty. I like to eat lean plus fat. I'm afraid I murdered my hard boiled eggs because they were hard to peel and I was impatient.

For dinner I had pork chops and ribs.

If I ever buy flanken ribs again, I will cook them BBQ style which can be done slow cooker style.

  1. I had to look up what is flanken meat. I found "Flanken ribs are beef short ribs that have been cut across the bone instead of between the bone. They cook slowly in an oven and become fall apart tender." And also "Flanken, Beef Short Ribs and Beef Spare Ribs are all actually the same piece of meat. The difference is simply in how it is cut." the part where it says "fall apart tender" sounds delicious. Since this beef is very gamey, would taste good when braised with herbs and spices.

  2. Luckily there's only 1pcs which with more fatty part, other ribs seem quite good. I was curious about your slow cooker method BBQ ribs and checked out the previous post that you shared. Very appealing indeed and perhap I can prepare this for my family Xmas party this year!

  4. I think I better stick to pork chop because I don't like gamey and fatty beef.
