Ol' Skool Smokehouse, Mutiara Damansara

Last Saturday, it was just my brother and I to the nursing home.

Update : Today I saw this post on Instagram. Good thing we caught them before they closed.

**********************************************************

Mum could not follow us because she was nursing an injury sustained from a misadventure last Wednesday. She was coming downstairs and missed the last step. This resulted in her losing her balance and falling to the floor.

Fortunately, she was not badly hurt except for bruising on her left foot and toes. She is on the mend and I expect her to make a full recovery in another week or so.

So after the visit with dad, we made our way to Ol' Skool Smokehouse at Mutiara Damansara.

We were a bit early and while waiting for the restaurant to open (at 12:00pm) we walked around to survey the area.

Most of the shops were not open while others were already in full swing. There are many Malay eateries selling nasi campur and nasi kukus. We also came upon a satay restaurant.

Pretty soon, we walked back to Ol' Skool Smokehouse and we were the first customers for the day.

You can read about the origin of the restaurant here.

The menu is simple and compact.

Let me enlarge it so that you can see it properly.

There are the starters and sharing platters.

And then you have the single plates.

The dessert, sides and drinks choices are also short and sweet (my brother lamented the lack of coffee hah...hah...).

My brother ordered the Small One Up to 3 Pax with Beef Ribs because Lamb Ribs were not available that day.

The default drink is Iced Lemon Tea. Since it was for 3 pax, three glasses were served and my brother had the third drink (he was a thirsty boy). The drink was sweetened but just barely so it was OK for me.

This was our BBQ platter - Beef Rib, Beef Brisket and Pulled Lamb served with two BBQ sauces and pickled green chilies/cucumber slices.

Our sides were baked beans, coleslaw and mashed potatoes.

Let's look at the sides. The baked beans were very soupy and it was just all right.

The coleslaw was quite ordinary, pretty much like the sort of coleslaw that you get at most places.

Now, the mashed potatoes were a different story. Yes, I had one and what I loved about it was, it was not finely mashed. You still get small chunks of potatoes and that's how I like mashed potatoes. So thumbs up for the mashed potatoes.

Now for the BBQ meats.

The beef rib was good. The meat was very tender, falling off the bone and moist.

The beef brisket were also very good, moist, tender and tasty. So were the pulled lamb. It was moist without any gamey smell.

I loved the pickled chilies and cucumber slices. Meanwhile, the two BBQ sauces served with the platter paled in comparison to the BBQ sauce that was provided at the table.

We consumed quite a bit of this BBQ sauce hee..hee..

Ah.... our tummies were very satisfied!

And now I want to share where to eat the BEST Nasi Briyani Johor that my family loves. It's on the same row as Ol' Skool Smokehouse right at the end of the row (it's a small no frills shop with no signboard) and you will see this board.

I suggested to my brother that we could go there for a future Saturday lunch.

  1. Good morning! I love the look of the building of this Old skool restaurant, very nostalgic looking. The baked beans looked too watery for my liking. The beef meat looked dry but I guess they were good with the BBQ sauce as both you and brother finished everything.

  4. Another meaty feast and there was quite a lot of food for only two persons, but I'm ot surprised that both of you managed to finish it because I'm (or we're?) quite of used to it, haha!

  5. I guess they're not doing as well as they have hoped. Their neighbours didn't help since both on either side seems to be vacant. The fact that you can find an empty parking space right in front of the restaurant does not bode well for them...the place does look a bit deserted.

    1. This area did look deserted at the time of our visit with some eateries shuttered (maybe they open in the evenings when business is better?). We enjoyed the BBQ and thought that we could come by when the craving hits but sadly, it was not to be so.
