Christmas we see Santa Claus and Christmas trees. Deepavali we see Kolam. Hari Raya we see ketupat.
Chinese New Year? Lanterns! And this fellow (Chinese Santa Claus? hah..hah...). Well he is better than Santa Claus because he brings prosperity!
I passed by ESH and they are having some special promos for the festive season.
When I went for lunch at my roast duck place, I saw that they put up these pretty red lanterns.
The duck was dry. So was the char siew. At least the siew yoke was moist and fatty with crispy skin. The Kopi C was the star here. I wish that they were consistent with the quality of the meats they serve.
I like the two big lanterns outside Rice & Pot Empire. I have not returned after more than one lackluster experience.
Back at The Starling, I saw these pretty lanterns.
This Fish With You mascot is taking on the role of Prosperity God (the hat). What big lips you have!
At SSF there were loads of CNY decorations.
When I was a child, I felt envious seeing my uncle's house all nicely decorated for CNY.
So when I went home (I lived with my grandparents at the time), I took a marker pen and drew designs on the front door.
My grandpa almost fainted.
At Ke Ren Lai, I spotted two small lanterns.
Meanwhile, at Red Kettle, the decorations were simple yet elegant.
The manager, Mr Yap, handled the decorations himself. Hmmm... the man has artistic talent.
I have none. That's why I became an accountant.
This mirror is his favorite piece. My photo does not do justice to this creation. Simple, understated and elegant is what I like.
You can check Red Kettle's Chinese New Year specials here.
Their neighbor, Two Sons Bistro, decorated with red lanterns.
At the basement, Obba Jjajang, was doing brisk business. It's best for me to wait for the excitement to die down first before I come over.
Wah, you are creative to think of taking a marker pen and drawing designs on the front door. I wouldn't be able to think of doing that.
ReplyDeleteLOL! My grandpa was not amused!
DeleteSince you "know" Donald well, perhaps you can hint to him the inconsistencies in their meat otherwise (on a bad day) they might lose first-time customers (like me) if not done well. P/S: I prefer Red Kettle's lanterns (which is more modern) to the traditional rounded ones.
ReplyDeleteDonald has not been seen at the shop of late and I wonder why. Ah, I also like Red Kettle's lanterns!
DeleteThat means Donald was just a worker (and has left for greener pastures)...and not part of the family running the business.
DeleteThat's what I suspected, business not so good and can't sustain - so have to go elsewhere to earn more.
DeleteWhat did you draw on the door, you still can remember? I saw the same inflated "Chinese Santa Claus" in Singapore. Lol. Wow I see a lot of red lanterns around your walk. I like ones at The Starling and Red Kettle. The rest are a little boring.
ReplyDeleteIt was a scallop design and I remember the color of the marker pen was blue hah..hah..hah...
DeleteAh so young already know scallops are nice hah...hah
DeleteLOL!
DeleteLOL on the drawing design on the door! I will sure get rotan for tht!😂
ReplyDeletehah..hah... you know lah, grandparents are very indulgent :)
DeleteI wonder did you kena makan rotan when your grandpa found your "CNY drawings"? LOL
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't LOL! You know lah, grandparents are more forgiving than parents!
