Chinese New Year Mood @ The Starling

The theme for this year's Chinese New Year at The Starling is "A Peranakan Spring".

I thought the deco is quite tasteful.

And it looked very familiar. Yes, the management has repurposed the Christmas deco and it is a very practical idea.

Very nice, isn't it?

So colorful. Definitely makes one feel cheery just looking at it.

As usual, there is a bazaar set up at the concourse where you can get your Chinese New Year snacks, bak kwa, clothes and all sorts of other related festive items.

There you go.

Snacks and cookies galore!

Love Letters (Kuih Kapit). During my childhood days, these were packed in recycled Milo tins.

A Chinese New Year must-have. Pineapple Tarts.

Keropok also got.

The one on the right looks like Kuih Bahulu.

This one I think is Kuih Bunga Ros. I ate a particularly good one some time ago, it just melts in your mouth.

You are really spoilt for choice.

There are Tempeh Chips.

Rempeyek.

Muruku

More Pineapple Tarts.

And all sorts of cookies.

And of course, bak kwa. I am not really a fan of bak kwa, especially now because I find it too sweet. It would be nice if they made bak kwa that was less sweet or not sweet.

I think this is somebody's favorite bak kwa

The one with the chicken wearing boxing gloves hah...hah...

When I was a kid, new clothes for Chinese New Year was always something to look forward to.

For the past few years, I never bothered with new clothes.

This year (more so) is no different. I will just wear whatever old thing that is in the closet. There is nothing to celebrate.

So that's it. In the days to come I bet there will be many people at the mall. Traffic will be heavy as many people will be going around doing their Chinese New Year shopping. My partner dubs them "The Lap Cheong Snatchers" hah..hah..hah...

  1. Yesterday I was at Pavilion Bukit Jalil, no CNY setup yet. All still Xmas decors and goods at the middle concourse. Starling is fast this year. I didn't know they are called Kuih Bunga Ros. Only know them by their Cantonese name. I seldom eat them because they are mostly very sweet cos in Cantonese they are called honey comb cookies. Never eaten Kuih Bunga Ros that melts in the mouth, where to buy those melt in the mouth ones may I know? Curious and wanna try them because those that I have eaten are crunchy and very sweet. I also never buy new clothes for CNY since year 2000. Only buy them when really required else just wear hand me downs from relatives. Lolx! 😂

    1. The melt-in-your-mouth kuih bunga ros was gifted to me. If I get it again this year, I will ask where to buy it and let you know.

    1. Yes, indeed! My late grandmother had so many of those but pity can't fit me as I am bigger sized than her.

  3. Wow!! The decorations are very CNY festive mood. I will visit there ASAP.
I have to move on and will buy few bright CNY tee shirts from AEON that costs less than RM15 each. Then I must buy cornflake cookies and kueh kapit to keep me sane & happy 😂😂😂
I think the Bak Kwa from Wing Heong is not too sweet and still the top favourite brand of visitors from Hong Kong. I got these testimonials from HKG friends themselves.

    1. I haven't gone shopping (except for groceries) at Aeon for a long time. CNY is the time to enjoy cookies and snacks. OK, let me try the Wing Heong bak kwa and see if I like it.

  4. I went Starling on last Sunday to get some CNY ornaments from Mr. DIY, mana tau this branch doesn't have any and I went to Seventeen Mall juga tak ada and the staff told me Jaya One have. So I proceeded to Jaya One but the collection is so limited, then at the end I came back to my area (Kepong) to get it. >_<
I found the CNY decor staircase lead to a wall very weird, haha!

  5. Are you referring to me? Lol...yes, that's my favourite bak kwa but will refrain from indulging this year to cut down on sugar intake. I've eaten Wing Heong before but it didn't resonate with me.

    1. Yes, you LOL! Ah, since Wing Heong didn't resonate with you, then most likely it won't resonate with me either.
