Covid-19 MCO : Day #69 (He Heard You)


That up there was my yesterday's nyum nyum nyum dinner. So good!

Some days ago I posted my partner's cooking. There were some unflattering (albeit honest) comments. No offence taken of course. I appreciate honesty.

So his cooking went from this...

  1. Of course this is a great improvement! His food looks colourful and tasty now.

    Come on la Penang kia sure can cook wonders that made Penang's food listed as world class in NY Times and CNN news. Penang kia are fussy with other food but easily contented with own cooking. They are also stingy, calculative and humorous folks. I am only funny and not stingy or calculative.

    2. TM : hah..hah.. Quite true what you said to a certain extent. My lahling is very particular about freshness of fish/prawns and also chicken/pork. Got a bit of smell only, he cannot eat. He is humorous (which I love) and luckily not stingy with me.

  5. I prefer the congee with salted eggs and sardines. The stirfry peas, potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, onions and pork or chicken is only nice if no oyster sauce is used because oyster sauce to me is overrated and overused in cooking. I think everyone who criticized your partner's is a armchair critic because I don't think they cook any better for themselves at home. Some of them don't even cook at home so I am offended for your partner because the food he cooks are those that I will happily eat.

    1. My partner is against oyster sauce, so none in his cooking. Aiyo..hah..hah...no need to be offended lah, those comments were not meant to be offensive. I take it in jest and it's all for a laugh.

    1. That was oink oink, marinated with some sauces which include tomato ketchup, hence the orangey color.

  8. That is a good improvement. From salted egg and porridge to stir fried meat and potato, I applause his effort. My man cooked lunch today. His cooking style is different from mine but I dont mind as a change. Blog about it soon.

  9. I agree with TM...bravo, bravo to a dish that not only looks tasty but colourful too. I'm sure there was no offence taken of his cooking coz we know you're a sporting person who takes all our comments in good fun...and not overly sensitive like some people can be. I hope your partner don't take offence too coz I don't remember reading anyone criticising your partner's cooking, some of us just used the words "boring, dull and not exciting" to describe his food which basically equals "not interesting"...and not that it was bad or anything like that.

    Hey, I actually like his fried saba fillet & salted eggs with porridge (I like anything with salted eggs, some more this time the yolks are vibrantly orange) and of course the one-dish meal he cooked is more like it...got pork, got mushrooms, got potatoes, got veggies (carrot, onions & peas), got sauce...is that stir-fried with oyster sauce & dark soy for maximum flavour? Nyum nyum! ;) Aha, I still see the bland, steamed 'with-no-seasoning' okra lurking in the background...wuahahahaha! :D P/S: I'd be so happy if I open my fridge and find your prepped dinner of pork (ok, maybe I prefer the pork leaner...hehe), mushrooms, asparagus & tomatoes! ^.^ And Ah Girl is finally proud of daddy's cooking today...you show 'em, daddy! ;D

    1. heh..heh..thanks! No worries, no offence taken by me or him. We are not so sensitive lah.

      He loves saba fillet and that's his go to for his porridge and the salted eggs are a bonus. He used dark soya sauce but no oyster sauce as he thinks it is bad (dunno why lah). So I have switched to vegetarian oyster sauce (made from mushrooms) which actually taste very nice. Yah, that okra hah..hah..that's how he takes it. Me, I would eat that with sambal belacan.

    2. Ah, so I see your partner doesn't eat oyster sauce because he thinks it's bad (aka a health issue)...and not because it's overrated! That means when you all dine out, you have to avoid the dishes with dark-type sauces since it's overused indeed as many of them are made with a combination of oyster sauce & dark soy. I cook with a lot of oyster sauce at home coz it's the easiest sauce to make. I've never tried vegetarian oyster sauce before, perhaps I should give that a try to see if the flavour/result is the same.

    3. When we eat out, it's not an issue although he knows there must be some kind of oyster sauce in the dish hee..hee.. My mum uses oyster sauce in her cooking, even in her spaghetti sauce! I love oyster sauce, most people do, so not overrated lah. It makes food tasty. The vegetarian Lee Kum Kee oyster sauce is quite good but I have to warn you, it is on the sweet side.

I actually use the same brand of oyster sauce as your vegetarian version...Lee Kum Kee (don't know why the bottle says Panda brand though...haha!), so I believe the vegetarian one should be good too. I recently bought a bottle (in haste)...same brand but listed as Oyster Flavoured Sauce (during the initial MCO coz I couldn't find my usual one)...that one turned out to be really awful. I couldn't stomach the salty taste. I tried maybe a spoonful and now don't know what to do with the whole bottle (guess I'll have to throw it away).

    5. The Panda brand is like their sister brand and if I remember correctly, my mum avoids that. Don't know why. I have used it before and I find that it is good. Sorry to hear that the one you hastily bought was awful. Since you can't stomach it, no choice have to throw. In my case, I would have composted it hah..hah...

    6. You mean there's a brand of Lee Kum Kee oyster sauce that doesn't have the word Panda? I've only seen the Panda brand...and thought that was just how they label it...I thought they're one and the same. So, I could have been buying the wrong brand all this while? I remember a long time ago, I think the bottle only says Lee Kum Kee but I don't see them anymore. Unless I'm wrong. I have to take a closer look the next time I buy oyster sauce...or perhaps try the vegetarian version you recommended.
