Oh Mama! : Mamalee@Damansara Uptown

Sometimes, it takes someone not from Damansara Uptown to convince me to visit a restaurant in Damansara Uptown. Tsk!

I have been passing by Mamalee for ages when I do my rounds in the neighborhood. In fact I have been visiting a little coffee place very near Mamalee but I was never motivated to climb up the stairs to see what Mamalee was all about.

I have been getting my iced Long Black from Baristar Coffee & Tea Express which is two doors away from Mamalee. This is opposite Alliance Bank.
So one day, I read a review by someone who seems to go everywhere for her WG lunches. With that I  got a sneak peak into Mamalee's menu and discovered that prices here are very affordable.

In terms of ambiance, don't expect much. It's a simple and fuss free set up with none of those fancy schmancy decor, which is fine by me.

And they are very progressive and offer the convenience of payment via e-wallets.

After perusing the menu, I decided that the best thing on the menu is the nasi lemak with various choices of chicken. I settled on the Nasi Lemak Rempah Fried Chicken (RM12.00) and Kopi O Ice (RM2.80).

But with the nasi lemak (or any other mains), the Kopi O (and selection of Teh, Teh O, Teh C, Kopi, Kopi C, Cham, Cham C) comes free. Woohoo!!

My foc Kopi O Ice (no sugar).  I prefer Annie 1's but this is still better than some Kopi O that I have had elsewhere.

My nasi lemak looked good. What I like is that they give you one whole chicken leg and it was of a good size. I suppose I shall not complain about the 1/2 an egg heh..heh...

Look at that. For RM12.00 with a kopi o thrown in, this is value for money. In terms of taste, well, the rice was not lemak, what it had was a whiff of ginger.

The sambal was decent (Chinese style I presume) and the chicken was what it should be - well seasoned, meaty, tender and succulent. That was a very satisfying meal and I paid using Grabpay.

I had to return for the Nasi Lemak Salted Egg Fried Chicken (RM12.00). I read many rave reviews about it but kept my expectations low.

Does that look wonderful?

I'll tell ya, the reviews were spot on. The salted egg sauce is thick and full of salted egg yolk flavor. If you are a fan of salted egg yolk chicken, this one is worth a trip to Damansara Uptown

This time, instead of coffee, I had Bubur Cha Cha (RM3.80).

It arrived looking very benign.

Oh look! This was very nice indeed, enough santan and not too sweet. I would order this bubur cha cha again.

Well, Mamalee is a gem of a revelation. Even though the nasi lemak rice missed the mark, but hey, look at the bright side - generous portions, decent sambal and very well executed (sizeable) chicken leg at such a reasonable price.

I will be back! By the way, with effect from June 2019, Mamalee will be open on Sundays. This Sunday 02-06-2019, there is a promotion on the Nasi Lemak Salted Egg Fried Chicken.

  1. A dead giveaway of a Chinese-style sambal is always the abundance of sliced onions in the sambal...haha! ;D Oh, I like the looks of this bubur cha-cha more than the one I recently had. This one has additional colours of sweet potato (yellow & purple) and the tapioca flour cubes that I like (though this one looks a bit dense)...but it's also missing the sago that I want in my bubur cha-cha. I'm sorry, but among all the sweet soups, bubur cha-cha is my top favourite, so (understand why) I'm particularly picky when it comes to my perfect bowl of bubur cha-cha...hehehe! ;)

    1. Oh, no need to apologize! I think to a certain extent most of us have our won standards and expectations of what our favorites should look or taste like. That explains why most nonya restaurants fail in my eyes heh..heh...

I have not had bubur cha cha in a long time, so any decent ones would please me!

    1. Someone should set up a cafe that sells these healthier alternatives. I am sure there is a market for it.
