Our Expensive Sunday Lunch

After checking out 66 Chu Yuk Fan at Taman Megah, I suggested to my partner that we should try the dim sum at Key Hiong, which is situated along the same row of shops.

I have been wanting to eat dim sum for a long time. Don't know why I have this craving.

So anyway, the day before, I tapau lunch for my partner. Sometimes I attempt to get him to eat different things, to be more adventurous so to speak. Yeah, like it works.

"I bought you Mexican food!" I announced. It was a chicken burrito bowl from Orale. After a while, I checked up on him. "Eh chiak boh?" (can you eat?).

My lahling scrunched up his face like a three year old and shook his head in the negative. "Too hot! I don't like hot things". Well, no more Mexican food for him. Haiz.....

Now back to Key Hiong. This is my brother's go-to place for tai pau. Yup, the place where he got me 8 tai paus for my birthday present last year. The tai pau here is awesome, very tasty, very worth it.

The restaurant was full but we managed to get a table when a customer left. I was very hungry and very eager to eat dim sum. So when the server came with a big tray, I picked these to share with my partner.

Oops I forgot that he doesn't eat chilies. Then we added two more items, one lo mai kai and one char siew pau.

The dim sum items were just OK for me, nothing outstanding. I have had better at other dim sum set ups like this one (such as Dim Sum Kitchen at Damansara Utama which sadly closed down a few years ago).

I thought the loh mai kai was rather bland.

Not my favorite chili sauce but it helped to make the food tastier. Am I sounding like a fussy old pot?

I usually enjoy siew mai but this one did not impress. Then more food came and greedy me picked another 3 items.

I picked something that I remembered my grandma used to enjoy.

I don't know what you call this but unfortunately it was starchy and bland. When we were done, I was so full. The lady boss came to calculate our bill and it came to RM58.00 (inclusive of one teh o).

I don't know how much one would expect to pay for dim sum at a place like this but it's a pricey lunch compared to what we usually eat on Sundays. OK, next week we go back to eat chap fan hee...hee....

  1. I have eaten there many times. It was always full house and I thought the dim sum was good to them but not me. I am glad I could trust your verdict today. I only likes their char siew paus.

  2. the lo mai kai looks flavourful because it was so dark. I guess you say it is bland because it doesn't have a special taste that stand out. the taste must be salty sweet but flat. nowadays I seldom eat dim sum at coffee shops because I feel that it is expensive for a coffee shop. a lor mai kai at canton-i with aircond is just about rm8 if I am not mistaken but it may taste bland to you too.

    1. It was just so flat and made me feel bloated even though I ate only half.

  3. does the lo mai kai have lap cheong (waxed sausage) in it? if it has, wouldn't think it would be bland unless the lap cheong has expired and lost its taste.

  4. That is the thing about dim sum - you just pick a few items and the price can go sky high. Will not go all that often, plus lots of msg - with that kind of money, better go eat something else.

    1. I won't be going back. If want to eat dim sum, it's best to go to a restaurant that is reputable, though it may cost quite a bit. Once in a while it's ok I guess.

  5. I think RM58 is quite expensive for what you had, at a normal kopitiam setting Dim Sum restaurant :(

  8. Eating dim sum sure is an expensive affair these days.. esp if the restaurant serves HK style dim sum, usually cost us RM100 for 4 pax :|

  9. That one is called fried carrot cake...my son's favourite (but I prefer to get them to fry it with taugeh). If you're someone who enjoys bold flavours, then you'll probably find dim sum bland. Most of them, especially the steamed items are usually mild in taste, that's why they give you chilli and sweet sauce to dunk your dim sum in (my husband dunks his in a lot of that salty sweet black sauce). That's also the reason why I prefer the fried items for that little bit more flavour. RM58 for 11 plates of dim sum seems reasonable to me coz dim sum is notably expensive. I eat 3 plates of dim sum (on my own) in my neighbourhood coffee shop, it already costs me close to RM20! ;P

    1. Oh, same thing as the char koay kark! Yup, the fried one with taugeh is best. This one was just floury and no taste. Ugh! I have had dim sum at other places where I enjoyed the taste and don't need any sauces. This one is basically sub-standard to me.
