Jeruk Mangga Asam Boi Chili Garam

There is something that I am addicted to at the moment. It's mangoes marinated in asam boi (dried sour plums) and sprinkled with chili garam (chilies and salt). Here, let me show you what I am talking about.

See that? This is at a fruit outlet called MBG@The Starling. MBG has a few outlets at other places too. Every now and then you can get special offers of certain fruits at very attractive prices.

I had been eyeing the mangoes for some time and finally decided to buy it one day.

Not cheap I tell you. But it was so damn good.

I also noticed bottles of condiments placed at the fruit bar.

Curious, I took a closer look.

Oh.... chili garam. What concoction is this? So on another visit, I tapau a scoop of the chili garam for research and development hee..hee...

I poured out the contents.

And had a taste. Hot, sweet and salty. I realized that it was predominantly sugar and chili flakes. More like chili gula. Anyway.

Since I love the marinated mangoes so much, I reckon I could replicate this at home and save some money. So I made my own chili garam.

One heaped tablespoon of coarse chili powder, one heaped tablespoon of sugar (guilty as charged!) and one level teaspoon of sea salt. Mix it all up.

I bought three mangoes, the ones called mango susu. I like them semi-ripe. I also bought a tub of asam boi and got busy.

Not difficult at all, this. Peel and cut mangoes. Add some asam boi. Some of the asam boi, I cut the flesh into pieces so that it would be more efficient to mingle with the mango slices. Then sprinkle some chili garam all over and toss.

Oh my, it smelt just like the one from MBG. Happy :)

After a few hours, I had a taste. Oh wow! So good. So so good. The mangoes were crunchy, sweet, sour, salty and hot from the chilies. So addictive!

I know some of you may have issues with the addition of sugar but it is necessary to balance out the tartness of the mangoes. But if you wish to leave it out, that's fine.

So there. I solved the mystery of the chili garam and now I can enjoy this awesome Jeruk Mangga Asam Boi Chili Garam at home.

Jeruk Mangga Asam Boi Chili Garam
Recipe source : Phong Hong

Ingredients :
- 3 medium sized semi-ripe mangoes (I used mango susu)
- 10 asam boi

For the chili garam :
- 1 heaped tbsp coarse chili powder (add more if you like it hotter)
- 1 heaped tbsp sugar (recommended, or can omit)
- 1 level tsp salt

Method :
1. To make chili garam, simply add all the three ingredients and set aside.
2. Peel and cut mangoes into desired size and put into a large mixing bowl.
3. Add asam boi. If the asam boi is fleshy, cut the flesh into small pieces.
4. Sprinkle some chili garam over the mango pieces and toss the whole lot to mix.
5. Transfer to a container and let marinate in the fridge for a few hours before consuming.

Note : I did not use all the chili garam. Can be stored in an airtight container for another batch of mangoes.

  6. Your homemeade one looks exactly like the ones you bought! ^.^ This is one recipe that can't do without sugar as the mangoes will be too tart (like any pickled fruit). I thought though you wouldn't need to add any salt since the assam boi is usually very salty. This is a snack that's best to see only and not have (for me) because of the high sugar and salt content! >_<

  7. I tasted the chilly garam powder in Thailand since I was a toddler and they served it with their sweetest pineapples. Last year I was in Kota Bahru and saw them sell containers of this chilly garam. I also bought them and experimented to see that they used icing sugar or finest sugar! Now you have lured me to make them too.

I see your recipe, I can imagine how they taste and my teeth shake and go weak at the thought of the spicy chili garam and the sourness of the mangoes, hahahaha! Enjoy your jeruk! I think it will take off a lot of your weight due to the sourness and the spiciness so just enjoy and eat away! :D
