Egg Yolk Pie

Last month was mooncake season and every year my partner would take me to buy mooncakes. And every year I find choosing mooncakes as gifts to be a headachy affair.

We usually buy mooncakes from the booths at Aeon right after our grocery shopping. When we get there, my head will go spinning from the various varieties available and I would have to consider who likes egg yolks and who doesn't.

So to cut the long story short, we bought a box of this together with a few boxes of other assorted mooncakes.

It was for a family member and then later he remembered that she is avoiding egg yolks. Ding dong ding dong, in the end we decided to keep it for ourselves and got her something else.

It comes in a box of 8 mini mooncakes (they call this egg yolk pie, cute), four with lotus paste and four with yam paste. As you can see from the photo, the two yam ones are missing.

I generally love yam and the one I sampled earlier was very good.

Wah! Loved this! Flaky crust with creamy yam filling. Not too sweet and the whole salted egg yolk added savory and salty notes to the mooncake.

Next I tried the lotus paste.

So cute.

One for now and one for later.

Nice! But I prefer the yam.

I like this Egg Yolk Pie mooncake. Next year, if I see this again, I want!

  1. I did see this being sold at the Yong Sheng stall at Aeon supermarket but the price is very expensive. I am sure it tastes very nice seeing that salty egg yolk is so big and nearly takes up the whole pastry. I am sure I will like this. Perhaps I will buy this next year if I see it. Thanks for the review.

  3. Every new year, I noticed more flavours of moon cakes would be on sale.

The chefs and bakers are getting more innovative to cater for the public demands.

Some day the moon cakes will have new flavours like petai, rambutans, salted fish, sambal belacan and what not. Even their boxes are getting sophisticated with colours and textures with drawers, multiple doors and teapots!

    Pening woiii...

    1. I dare not try the durian one because although I love durian, sometimes when it is made into pastries, not so nice.

  11. I never like lotus paste mooncake (or I should say that I don't like mooncake? hehe) but the one with yam filling u had doesn't look like mooncake at all, just like a pastry. I like the yam & whole egg yolk combination!
