Roasted Asparagus is Delicious

You know, I hardly have the chance to eat asparagus because it is so pricey. At the restaurant, forget it. At the supermarket, forget it. I can't even remember the last time I had asparagus. I know they are awesome stir fried with prawns or sambal belacan.

When I watch food prep videos, I noticed many of the foreign youtubers like to use asparagus as one of the vegetables that they prep in advance. I suppose asparagus is affordable in their country.

Then one day at Jaya Grocer, I saw this.

Australia green asparagus (350g). Normal price RM16.90, now RM9.90 per pack. So I wasted no time in buying two packs.

These are the big fat ones and I reckon they would be great roasted with bacon.

I have seen this done on TV and this was my chance to give it a try. Just wrap each spear of asparagus with a rasher of bacon and roast at 200C for 15 minutes.

Oh...it was so good! The bacon was nicely browned and crisp and the asparagus were tender crisp.

Since I had another packet of asparagus (and no more bacon) I roasted the whole lot in the same pan, tossing the asparagus in the residual bacon fat.

These were equally good.

I am really loving these asparagus and I'll be on the lookout for special offers.

  4. I remember the first time I went and bought these, not cheap...and I went round the market carrying the plastic bag with the veg, heads sticking out...and eventually, to my horror, I found that they had all gone headless - must have got broken and dropped off all along the way. And wait till you hear my story of the time I went and bought a bag full of quail eggs... LOL!!!

  6. I don't buy asparagus that often as so little bunch it cost a lot. But I love it with just simply roasted and drizzle with olive oil.

  7. Oh, you've got them at a real bargain. They're even thicker than the ones I recently cooked. Wrapped in bacon is definitely going to be good. I'd agree that they'd be awesome stir-fried with prawns but probably not sambal as that'll be a waste of good, fresh, expensive asparagus (I think westerners would baulk at that idea too)...hehe! :D

  13. My wife is very allergic to asparagus as it could trigger asthma attacks! This is crazy to say that but it is true. So I seldom had this luxury chance to eat unless they were served at wedding dinners or you invite me.
