At Mother's Request : Paella

As I have mentioned in this post,  my brother and I wanted to take our parents to Marta's Kitchen when they were in town not too long ago.

But at my nephew's birthday lunch, my other brother told us that he would be cooking paella the following weekend because it was our mum's special request. So Marta's Kitchen would have to wait.

To avoid confusion, I will refer to this cheffy brother of mine as YB 1 (not Yang Berhormat but Younger Brother) and my foodie brother as YB 2.

So the following Saturday, I was at YB 2's house when this photo of the paella work-in-progress was sent to mum's phone.

Yup, paella cooked in a regular pot. A few moments later, the doorbell chimed. No, it wasn't the paella. But this.

Apparently, YB 2 ordered himself a belated birthday cake.

Though from the message on the card, it looked like it was more for his cat.

Wah, got dessert after lunch!

And so we waited for the paella which finally arrived in all its glory.

Look at that. The paella was loaded with chunks of pork belly and mussels. The rice got its color from turmeric. I must say that it was very flavorful though a little bit wet for me (fussy pot!). It was a very generous portion and there were some leftovers for dinner.

Now on to the dessert heh...heh...

We sang the birthday song and I was in charge of slicing the cake.

And then I realized that this cake looks very familiar. I have seen it somewhere before. Or have I baked it before?

Ya lah........... way back in 2012 I baked a Tiramisu Cake. But please don't click the link because my cake was very ugly. Perhaps there should be a re-attempt in the near future hee..hee...

My cake from 2012 heh..heh...heh...

  1. If you don't want people to click the link...then you must not provide the link (or the photo-lah)...hahaha! :D So I clicked and learned something new...didn't know there's such a thing as a cake leveler that can be used to cut the cake horizontally (obviously I'm no baker). But hey, the cake looks alright. Is that a Malaysianised paella that your brother cooked?...with pork belly & turmeric..hehe! ;)

  2. Wow localized version of paella but must be good with the pork belly.

Happy belated birthday to your foodie brother and happy birthday to your nephew.

  3. Yeah you wanted me to click the link to see your ugly cake. I did and left a comment there to your yummy cake post written 7 years ago! I was surprised to see Suchan's name as she was my sister's guest during her wedding in Penang. How come you didn't invite me to read your blog many years ago? Haiks!

Paella is a Spanish rice and I wish to eat this. I have eaten several types of Mediterranean rice and they taste better than our fried rice sometimes. I want to experiment using tumeric in frying rice since the Thai Pineapple Fried Rice also uses it.

  5. The rice looks good enough being a local version using turmeric instead of saffron. Where did your YB2 order the cake from? such a big cake. did it taste as good as yours? :)

  8. Paella is one of my favourite dishes. If I do make it at home though I always ruin it by trying to make it healthier with whole grain rice. The topping on the cake looks divine.

    1. The rice makes a difference. I think we can't get the proper paella rice over here.
