Traditional Malay Curry

I am no authority on curries, Malay or otherwise. That's what it said on the packaging, Gulai Melayu Tradisional. So I took it as good and for the first time, tried a recipe printed on a spice packaging.

My mum bought me these. Rempah Masak and Rempah Gulai from our homegrown Terengganu brand - Cap Bunga Rose. This is their new packaging that looks all spiffy and modern.

Then I spotted the recipe provided behind the packaging.

Ah! How could I not try it? It looked easy enough. Not many ingredients are used and you don't even need the usual dry spices such as cinnamon, star anise or cloves as all these are already ground into this curry powder.

The result? Delicious! I am usually not a fan of gravy, preferring to keep my rice white and dry. But when I ate this gulai, I scooped every drop to flood my rice because it was so darn good.

I am uncertain of this curry powder is available outside Terengganu. If not, the manufacturer should consider distributing it so that folks from other states can enjoy this curry too.

  1. That is quite a lot of own ingredients to add. I guess it is not exactly instant. Sure would love to try if I happen to see any here.

    1. No, not instant. It's just the powder and quite hassle free to cook.

  2. This is the 'national' dish in our home ^_^ My husband loves curry very much, PH. But alas, he loves mamak curry instead of Malay curry. He doesn't like coconut milk. I' m quite a masterlah in terms of cooking all type of curry. Please don't feel jealous! Hahaha!

Never heard of this produk. Normally I use Babas, Adabi or Mak Siti sort oflah nama productnya.

Next time your mother wanna buy for you this curry, tell her to buy a few dozens and then can jual to all your blogger friends ^_^

  3. I also don't like gravy normally but when it comes to curry gravy like the one you cooked here, I will wipe clean the plate/bowl containing the curry gravy with bread so that I get every drop of the curry.

  11. Hi Phong Hong, this curry looks good. Is it spicy and savoury? Some ready packed curry mix are salty and oily.

    1. Hi Kimmy! This is just the curry powder, no salt added. Can adjust the spiciness and saltiness when we cook.
