Lockdown Day #24 : Tuna Potato Patties

Today I revisited something I made once before - Tuna Potato Patties. This time I took note of what I threw into the mixture so that I can remember the next time I want to make this again.

I haven't quite perfected it yet because some of my patties cracked when fried. I may not have added enough binding agents to hold the patties together. I think it needed a bit more mashed potatoes and a bit more beaten egg.

Let's take a look at my garden or rather my chili plant. For the first time ever, I am getting a good number of chilies!

They are flowering quite well and most have developed into chilies. In the past, either the flowers or the young chilies dropped off.

These chili plants grew from my compost heap. They must have come from the chili seeds or bad chilies that I threw away.

My Spider Flower is also doing well except for the presence of pesky caterpillars.

In fact I found a pupa under one of the leaves a few days ago.

This will develop into a butterfly. What kind I wonder.

But I missed the butterfly.

Can you spot the bee that was busy buzzing around the flowers?

I bought a bunch of daun sup and since the roots were intact. I decided to plant it. It is growing quite well and I won't need to buy anymore daun sup, provided my plant does not get eaten up by the snails!

This is my pot of messy looking chives that has been growing since God knows when. It is a very hardy plant and thrives on neglect.

This is Belle Belle looking very sien while mommy was busy gardening.

And this is her again relaxing like a boss.

Now back to my tuna potato patties.

I am going to put the recipe here so that I can refer to it in future.

Tuna Potato Patties
Recipe source : PH agak-agak

Ingredients :

- 2 cans tuna flakes in water (1 used Ayam Brand)
- 4 potatoes, steamed and mashed
- 2 tbsp chopped chives
- 2 tbsp cornflour
- 1 egg beaten (do not use all)
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- salt and pepper to taste

Method :
1. Drain the tuna and squeeze out excess water.
2. In a mixing bowl add tuna, mashed potatoes, chives, cornflour, garlic and onion powder, salt and pepper.
3. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
4. Pour in the beaten egg bit by bit and continue to mix until the mixture can come together to form patties. The mixture should not be too wet or too dry.
5. Form the mixture into patties and fry in hot oil for about 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown.
6. Drain on paper towels and serve.

  6. I think you like Belle more than Girl judging from the number of story you share in your post.

  7. I was inspired by your earlier tuna potato patties that I made them too (maybe I'll show them in a future post). So I guess your agak-agak recipe the first time turned out better than this agak-agak recipe (with ingredient list). Looking at the rather crisp exterior, I believe your tuna patties were deep-fried? (I shallow fried mine).

If I have a green thumb, I would plant fresh coriander & spring onions instead of daun sup & chives as the former two are garnishes/ingredients that's more important to me because of their taste (quite obvious based on my latest post...haha). Having them readily available in the garden is a bonus coz I've had to do without when I run out of it in the fridge and will not purposely go out just to buy them...haiz. Have you planted coriander before?

    1. I shallow fried mine too, I mean the oil was halfway up the patties.

I read your post early this morning and have yet to comment! I LOVE coriander just like you but failed many times at planting it. If I could, I would have many pots of coriander in my garden. LOL! I am still trying though..

  9. Your tuna potato patties will be delicious snack for me. Greedy me will snack until skip dinner. I wonder if I can substitute tuna with sardine because I still have 2 small tin of sardine from the first MCO. Your chili plant is very healthy and fruitful. Mine quite skinny with less chilies. Pretty white spider flower and hope the pupa won't eat up all the leaves. Oh yes, I can see the tiny busy bee in both images. I think chives is the most hardy plant in the garden. Belle and Girl won't follow you into the garden?

    1. hah..hah...yes, it is nice to munch on as a snack. I am sure you can use sardine. Just make sure to drain it well. Belle and Girl do stay with me in the garden. But mostly they will lepak2 on the show rack or at a comfy corner.

  10. These patties look like something my mum would make. She'd substitute whatever she had in the cupboard - sometimes tuna, sometimes salmon or something else altogether.
