I Cook Steak At Home

These days I prefer to eat steak at home. Simply because I can cook it to my preferred doneness and get it right.

Quite frankly, cooking steak is not difficult at all. The only problem you might face is buying a good piece of steak. I get mine from Jaya Grocer

Before cooking, make sure the beef is at room temperature. Pat dry with paper towels and then season one side with salt and pepper. Before that, I heat up my cast iron pan. When it is hot, I add olive oil and swirl the pan to coat.

Place the steak in the pan, seasoned side down and put the timer on for 4 minutes. While the steak is cooking, season the top side with salt and pepper.

When the timer beeps, flip the steak (I use a pair of tongs) and time for 3 minutes. One minute before time, I add a small knob of butter for richness and aroma. When time's up, transfer the steak to a plate to rest for about 6 minutes.

While the steak was sizzling away, I roasted some asparagus. I love these.

Once the steak is done resting, slice.

On another occasion, I bought a smaller piece of steak.

It was thinner than the first one.

I should have reduced the cooking time and instead of medium, I got it almost well done instead.

But it was still very good. Tender and juicy.

  1. You make cooking steak at home sound so easy. Thanks for letting us know where you bought your steak. The slices of steak look delicious. The asparagus must be so tasty when roasted. From reading what you wrote, can I safely say that you just remove the steak from its packaging and pat dry to season? No need to wash it, right?

    1. It is easy :) I do rinse the meat though some people say it is unnecessary.

  2. Perfect!!! I wish we had cuts like your here. Here, we have huge chunks, frozen till beyond recognition. The mere sight of the colour would put me off already.

  3. Thank you for showing us how to cook steak. My hubby and son loves steak. But I can't bring myself to eat the red to pinkish meat. I need it well done and it gets tough.

  4. OMG! I saw blood in your steak. It's for vampires to eat. I would prefer to eat steak without blood cos I might faint. Muahahaha

Recently it went viral in China that men should not eat asparagus!

    1. Actually it is safer to eat a well cooked one in terms of food safety. I don't eat steak so often lah. One thing I dislike about asparagus is that it makes the pee smell!

  12. I almost never cook steak at home...and what you wrote here affirms why. 1) the difficulty of getting the doneness just right...I can't judge from the thickness how long the meat needs to be cooked and 2) the price...if I need to pay RM84 for a piece of uncooked steak, I'd rather leave it in capable hands in case I ruin it. Plus I'm one of those who like flames to kiss my steak (for that wonderful charred, smoky flavour)...wuahahahaha! :D If I do cook steak at home, it'd be probably some cheap steak that I slice for salads.

    1. Ah, flame grilled steak, I like! That's something I can't do at home. I've been wanting to visit Vantador but they only open at dinner time. So I am waiting for you to go first hah...hah...

    2. Sorry to tell you that won't be happening. How about you go first lah....haha! :D Anyway, I can't afford the dry or wet-aged steaks at Vantador. A meal for two here can cost in the region of RM1000. Their tomahawk is priced around RM800! O_o Not only that but I've read reviews that described the meat as gamey, cheese-like, too beefy-flavoured and chewy, so I'm not about to find out with such prices. >_<

    3. hah..hah... yes, i read those discouraging reviews too. Like you, I am also hesitant about spending so much and then ending up disappointed.

    1. Senang! Tapi ya lah, harga tu.... hee..hee.... LL makan sekali sekala aje. Daging biasa boleh, tapi kena ketuk-ketuk dulu untuk lembutkan daging.
