To The Good Batch with The Good Brother

This late lunch happened on the day when our dad was discharged from hospital. This year, dad has been plagued with health problems.

We went to hospital together to fetch him and mum. Mum is dad's personal nurse (mind you, she was trained in the UK) and she stayed with him throughout his admission.

After we got to my brother's house (where my parents are staying), we waited for mum and dad to settle down before we set off to pacify our hungry tummies.

It was almost 3pm when we got to The Good Batch. This is my brother's first visit.

Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a server and once seated, we were informed that the "special" soup that day was Potato Soup served with "a big piece" of garlic bread. I don't normally order soup as I am not fond of western style soups where cream is added. But since we were hungry, I thought a good potato soup might be good for us.

We split the garlic bread into two (share and share alike hee..hee...) and shared the soup from the same bowl. I'm afraid there was nothing special about the soup as it was very thin and hardly tasted of potatoes. I had expected a soup with more body with chunks or blended potatoes, but there was none.

My brother ordered the Turkey Ham Carbonara which he said is pretty good for a non-oink oink carbonara. It did look good with the raw egg yolk and nicely browned turkey ham.

I wanted something light and went for the Pulled Duck Benedict in spite of not liking their crispy duck on a earlier visit.

I still don't like the duck (not ordering anymore dishes that has pulled/crispy duck) and unfortunately for me, the poached eggs were a disappointment.

See? Overcooked. Ah well. At least my brother enjoyed his pasta.

  1. Hope your father is feeling better. From all your reviews, I don't think I would want to go and eat at this eatery.

    1. Dad is on the mend, thanks :) I think the kitchen crew is not the same as before their renovation.

  2. I ordered poach eggs in one cafe the other day, they were nicely done, not overcooked but just nice and runny. However, I managed to finish one piece only, the other piece was shared among my sisters whose breakfast was also shared out as well... hahahaa...

  4. Oh dear! Hope your dad's recovering well. Not easy taking care of old folks, been there done that!

Wow!!! That is more ham than pasta in what your brother hard. I wouldn't mind that poached egg you had - at least it was still soft and moist unlike what I had at one place here - it was raw...and just the yolk, almost! So pissed off!

    1. My dad is recovering, slowly but surely, thanks :) Yes, it's tough but I am lucky that my mum is a very capable caregiver to my dad. We are blessed.

They were most generous with the turkey ham. The egg is edible to me but since it's poached eggs, I would expect runny yolks.

  5. Sorry to hear about your dad's health problems...hope he's better now. It looks like I'm not the only one having problems with the cooking of the eggs (they overcooked both the fried and poached eggs, the scrambled eggs were at least better but also not among some of the better ones I've had). Even so, my poached egg wasn't as overcooked as yours (I would have sent that back). That's why I've never been back coz a brunch cafe that can't get their eggs right would not be acceptable in my books. But some of their dishes are fairly decent...just stick to one without any eggs! >.<

    1. My dad is recovering, thanks :) It looks like they are not consistent in their execution of the poached eggs. Now that their menu is so simplified, there is not much choice to choose from. I won't visit for a while until I miss their coffee hah..hah..

  6. Hope your dad has a speedy recovery! Too bad about the soup because I like garlic bread with soup. Your brother's Turkey Ham Carbonara looks good but I do not like raw egg yolk, would prefer half cooked runny yolk.

  7. All your food photos looked good except your comments. I realized that foodie photos cannot be judged from the looks.

Your poor dad will need all your love and care for speedy recovery. My prayers for his speedy recovery.

  8. Haha, first time see a egg benedict dish served with such a miserable "poached egg", or does it qualifies to be called as a poached egg I doubt >_<
The potato soup, totally failed for my standard and it looked like made from powder which like what we usually got from one of the pizza chain restaurant.
