I mentioned this fairly new eatery in this post. So as usual, I checked the ratings on Google review.
Oh dear. A score of 2.7 but to be fair, there were only 3 reviews. One of the reviews was rather brutal.
"Tasteless hospital food. Unskilled cooking workers disguised as healthy food". Is this assessment fair? There is only one way to find out.
So I went upstairs where the sign said "Closed" (this has happened twice in a row now hah...hah...). A food delivery rider ahead of me went inside and I followed suit.
There was no one inside, so he went to the "Staff Only" door (which is the kitchen) and spoke to someone inside.
I did likewise asking if they were open for dine-in. A very nice Indon lady came out to assist me. She was very warm and welcoming, all smiles, which is very good.
The interior is clean and bright with a rather pristine clinical feel. Ordering is via QR code and I do have some complaints about the system.
I made two orders in error and wanted to cancel one, but the system does not seem to allow for this. So I asked for assistance but the lady was not able to figure it out.
So to beat the system, I scanned the QR code from another table (to start afresh) and completed my order but not without some issues. The remarks section could only accommodate two (short) words. So I had to make the remark verbally (to request no sugar in the coffee) hah..hah..
You can see the menu here. The food is made from the same fixed components (the vegetables) with the variable components being proteins, carbs and sauce being changed in various permutations.
I chose this from the digital menu.
This is the only protein that I liked. The rest - chicken breasts, prawns, tofu and salmon did not strike my fancy.
That is a very colorful bowl of food and it looked very pleasing. There was brown rice, steamed broccoli, corn, carrots, shredded purple cabbage, sliced tomatoes and a deep fried chicken drumstick. On the side was BBQ sauce.
1. I enjoyed the fried chicken. It was well marinated, tasted very much like the fried chicken that my late dad made when I was a little girl - marinated with salt and garlic I think.
2. The portion of brown rice is just nice - not too much, not too little (my partner might find it not enough).
3. The BBQ sauce is different from regular BBQ sauce. It is much thinner in consistency - sweet, salty and smoky.
4. The broccoli, corn and carrots were cooked just right - not mushy and retaining its crisp (the carrots were softer of course).
5. The raw purple cabbage and thinly sliced tomatoes were fresh.
Not-so-positive point :
Only one. The broccoli, corn and carrots were unseasoned, so they were bland.
See. More positives than negative. So my only issue is the vegetables were bland. No wonder someone said it was "hospital food".
Curiosity satisfied, I would say that the food is actually decent but not interesting. So I am not likely to return.
It is ideal for people who like their food with less/no salt and low in fat. Or for those who want to start a clean/nutritious way of eating (by nutritious I mean anything other than the usual lunch/dinner fare outside like curry mee, char koay teow, junk/ultra processed food etc, you get the drift).
So no. Judging from the lack of seasoning in their fare, I am not tempted by these pretty colorful sandwiches.
As a side note, while I was there, I saw a few food delivery riders come in to collect orders. At the same time I heard the "ding!" (or dings!) of the ordering system. So they do quite a bit of deliveries. All is not lost.
All the best, EatHami!
Good morning! With so many positive points, I thought you would revisit this eatery but I was wrong. All the best eathami!
ReplyDeleteThe western food stall in my neighbourhood coffeeshop stall serves very nice seasoned vegetables. Their carrots, cauliflowers and broccoli were tender, well cooked and soft with a tinge of freshness and sweetness, contrary to what you had here.
For me the veggies must have at least a light seasoning of salt. Very difficult to eat if it is bland like how it was served.
DeleteI like fresh food without seasonings so if their food still retains the fresh food own natural taste then I will willingly buy them to eat. Not for frozen food that has lose all the natural original taste though. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteThe veggies are steamed from fresh so you may like it.
DeleteMy first impression when I saw the first photo is....hey, this is something that PH can easily prepare at home...lol! I guess this is a place for people who want to eat healthy, so less seasoning (especially salt). Bland food always tastes like hospital food...haha. So, this is probably another restaurant that won't survive long.
ReplyDeletehah..hah... yes, can prepare at home but having to buy all the components and then not being able to use all is too troublesome. If they have enough health conscious people who are willing to pay for their healthy fare, they might survive.
DeleteI'm ok with bland poached vegetables but for protein, I would have hoped for stronger seasoning.
ReplyDeleteI need some seasoning for veggies, cannot tahan the bland taste.
DeleteI think they think you can eat the veges with the BBQ sauce if you cannot eat the steamed vegetables just plain like that.
ReplyDeleteI always buy own customised vege bowls from Salad Atelier and chose no gravy no sauce.
Some vegetables are cooked also without any seasonings but salad atelier put butter on their pumpkins so my spouse cannot eat that as he doesn't like the cooked butter taste and he says the cooked butter makes his throat seized up a bit.
I suppose so, like a dressing but BBQ sauce with veggies not so ngam in my opinion. Yes, I remembered you posted your salads without dressings/sauce as you prefer plain. I used to dislike veggies cooked with butter as I don't like the smell but I am ok with it now.
