Note : I wrote this post back in 2023, my annus horribilis. Indeed my lunch that day matched the sentiments of the year.
There is a new eatery opened many months ago at The Starling - The Barn. Well, it looked interesting and I reckon the menu is something that might appeal to me and my brother.
I wanted to visit on my own but from the looks of it - sharing platters and alcohol, this place might be more suited for coming with company.
And one day I decided to be brave and go it alone (as I always do).
There was a group of young people having a good time and I could see that they were enjoying their drinks.
Naturally, I gravitated to the Steak and Meat section. There was an item that I liked - Flaming Baby Back Ribs and I reckon I can finish the whole thing easy but shy lah to order on my own like that.
So I chose the Ribeye Steak and requested for it to be prepared to medium rare. As for drinks - highly predictable, I got me a Latte.
Service was very slow. But I was in no hurry. Then I saw that the big group of youngsters had ordered the Flaming Baby Back Ribs which was flambeed at the table. From the looks of it, the quantity was not that much and it was really sparse to be shared among 12.
One sip of the Latte and I was taken aback. It had a rancid taste. I have had many good lattes of late and I know what a latte should taste like. Then I took another sip just to confirm and yes, it tasted really bad. I reckon they may have used powdered creamer that had gone past its shelf life.
Giving credit where credit is due, it was properly medium rare, well seasoned and tasted pretty good. The black pepper sauce was more than decent.
The vegetables I am afraid was vile tasting. So was the mashed potatoes. It had an acrid rancid taste, not butter but some kind of oil.
This was how I left - shocked, dejected and cheated.
Note : This eatery has gotten very good reviews on Google, so I was very unlucky when I visited.
I encountered something similar at another eatery but how to tell them that they used something that is rancid ? They need to eat from our plate and they could very well pretend they couldn't taste the rancid taste π
ReplyDeleteTherefore I also didn't mention to the eatery that something is rancid.
I would complain/comment if there is someone of authority there like the manager or boss. No point complaining to the staff as they don't really care or in some cases can't understand what you are talking about. LOL!
DeleteDepending on the situation, at times I will feedback to the staff to let the chef know but at the end of the day, it depends on the staff whether they want to convey our feedback to their chef and kitchen.
ReplyDeleteMe too, if the staff seems like someone who is responsible and can easily engage with customers.
DeleteSometimes the reviews on Google may not be accurate and true, I understand there are people who are paid to give fake reviews.
ReplyDeletehah..hah... some reviews are by family and friends. Must sapot! sapot!
DeleteBy the way, just a thought that came to my mind, when you visit your dad, do you all bring food to him, are the food at the nursing home ok? Because I have an uncle who is residing at a nursing home right now as he has dementia, the food at the nursing home not really appetising as they are the same old same old, so when we visit him, we would bring his favourite outside food for him to eat.
ReplyDeleteWe used to bring his favorite chicken rice for him but he told us to stop. He seems OK with the food at the home. How sweet of you to bring your uncle's favorite food when you visit.
Deleteoh dear, the rancid taste really spoils the mood. I agree that this kind of place is more suited for 2 or more people with the sharing platters.
ReplyDelete40 minutes for the food to show up! wow....that's too long....I wonder how long would it take if the place is full.
I reckon I went on a bad day. Maybe they function better during dinner because that's when the main crowd comes. So lunchtime they are manned by their D team LOL!
DeleteI was wondering what kind of name is that for a place....until I read that you were burnt...lol! Yeah, this type of place I'm not brave enough like you to dine in alone...coffee shops, I'm fine. Since you mentioned that the place have very good reviews on Google, I went to check...and, lo and behold, I saw your review there. Wow, you didn't mince your words when you left your review. Seeing that you tend to not even mention the name of the place on your blog when the experience is not good, I didn't think you would leave a Google rating...haha. So, they asked you to contact them, did you? Sometimes it leads to a free meal...when they want to make it up to you. ^_*
ReplyDeletehah..hah... It was so bad that I left a scathing review. Really cannot tahan. Yes, I did contact them and was invited for a meal on them but I didn't accept because, well, who knows what might be in the food .... LOL!
DeleteTo be honest, I used to trust Google Reviews but since I experienced so many times being asked to give 5 stars rating or saw "notice" of "requesting" good rating in restaurants, I took back my trust. >_<
ReplyDeleteIsh! They shouldn't request like that. Customers must give honest review.
