Not A Nice Sandwich or Bun

Finally a post with carbohydrates hah..hah...hah... Well, this happened in August 2024 during my experiment with what eating carbs again does to me.

After a fairly good experience at Yin's Sourdough Cafe & Bakery, I decided to revisit to try more sandwiches. Besides, I love their coffee.

From my observation, this cafe is rather popular and enjoys a healthy patronage.

When visiting a cafe like this, coffee is a must. These days, I enjoy a good Latte/Flat White, thanks to my brother's influence.

I opted for a baquette with a curried chicken filling.

I'm afraid I did not like the chicken. I should have suspected that they used chicken breast. It was dry and the curry sauce was very diluted and dripped all over the place.

So I ate the sandwich deconstructed. A bit messy. As for the salad, I did not expect the same salad that was previously served with another sandwich (drizzled with too sweet Balsamic glaze) since I did not think such a salad would complement a sandwich with curry filling.

Then I decided I wanted to try the cinnamon bun. That's how it is with me. When I eat carbs, I want more.

Bad call. The bun was dry. Haiz! So there are hits and misses at this bakery cafe. You need to know what to order and what to avoid.

  1. Good afternoon! From your description, I can understand why the sandwich and bun were not up to your standard as I don't like chicken breast meat also. I had breads and buns for my tea break ytd (Monday) and breakfast this morning. I bought Mentaiko Mayo potatoes bun (S$2.40 x 2), Chicken Katsu bun (S$2.90) and Sugary Melon Bun which looks like a HK Polo Bun (S$2.30) from a Japanese bakery at Orchard Wisma Atria (name of the bakery is Gokoku, website www.res.com.sg). I must say I like the Mentaiko Mayo potatoes bun as it is savory, satisfying and filling, But I would not say the same for the Sugary Melon Bun which is too light and the texture rough for me. As for the Chicken Katsu bun I would give it an average rating as it is nothing to shout about.

    1. Good morning! Thanks for sharing your pastry experience. I don't think I would like the Sugary Melon Bun and Mentaiko Mayo Potatoes Bun. I like cinnamon bun but very few places do it well.

  2. Ah, hhhmmm, ya, I agree that some of their items need to be improved. I haven't been back there after the apple pie just because there are too many eateries to try out and also we have our favourites to frequent too.

  3. I've always enjoyed/preferred a latte or flat white...and couldn't understand why you like americano...lol! Just as I've learned to not order steaks in a non-steakhouse, I've also learned to not order a sandwich with a local filling (like curry chicken) at a western-type place..hah..hah. Not to forget westerners actually prefer chicken breast (which is the more expensive cut for them and call the leg dark meat! :D), so you'll usually find chicken breast used in western-style cafes. The other day I watched Malaysia Gourmet with Justine Schofield (Australian cook) and she did her version of poached chicken rice with chicken breast (which I found really funny since most of us locals don't like that part)!! :D

  4. I visited Yin's 3 times, 2 were good, 1 was mediocre. I had their French Toast on last visit, it was above average and my friends had peanut butter banana toast and toast with guacamole, both were rather well prepared too. Oh ya, the portion was huge!
