Saturday Lunch Fever

Well, I didn't have fever lah but I kena back pain. So I might as well have had a fever (which I prefer to backache. Tsk!).

As usual (this is becoming a habit. Tsk! Tsk!) I dropped by Halla Holla on the way to my brother's house. They have a newly curated item - Salty Pretzel (available only on weekends).

See. One cheat day leads to another. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! But, proteins first, then carbs to blunt the glucose spike.

While munching on the chewy pretzel, I spotted this unconventional Christmas tree. I mean, why not, right?

Just take any tree and hang some deco on it and you have a Christmas tree without having to spend money to get a conventional one. Very wise. Very creative.

Ah! Let's just jump right to it. Lunch was again at Yan Wo Seafood Restaurant.

Where my brother's craving for the (humongous) Deep Fried Pork Knuckle with Thai Sauce was fulfilled hee...hee...

I took charge of carving the pork knuckle for easy serving. It was of course, excellent! Crispy skin, tender meat and delicious sauce.

This is deep fried chicken coated with their special sauce and crushed peanuts. Sorry I can't remember the name because I absent mindedly threw away the receipt.

It was not bad except that I wasn't too fond of the peanut coating. I mean, nothing wrong with the peanuts, they were fresh but I felt they did not go well with the chicken.

But my brother found it tasty especially when he ate the chicken with soy sauce. It apparently improved the flavor profile.

The Claypot Brinjals were excellent. Tender deep fried brinjals coated with a thick delicious sauce. We once ordered a similar dish at Kar Hiong and it was terrible LOL!

Can't go wrong with Claypot Kangkung Belacan. It was amazingly tasty.

So that was another scrumptious Saturday lunch that left us with very stuffed bellies.

And this was all that was left of the pork knuckle hee..hee...

Unfortunately for me, I was left with an unquenchable thirst and a steep drop in energy that afternoon. Oh, I went for a movie, Kraven the Hunter, which was a waste of time and money.

And later in the evening, my back hurt. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!

Not to worry, I am recovering. I fasted for 24 hours yesterday and broke my fast in the evening with some leftover minced beef and fried eggs. I am attempting another one today.

I am feeling much better and I reckon I should be all right by tomorrow.

  1. Good morning! I went to watch "The last dance" (HK Mandarin movie) recently and I enjoyed the movie that it doesn't feel like a 2 hours movie for me. Good that you are feeling better, I am feeling better today too!

    1. Good morning! I saw that movie listed but I rarely go watch Chinese movies. Maybe one day I should for a different experience. Good to know that you are feeling better.

    2. Why Kraven the Hunter movie was a waste of time and money for you?

    3. The story line was very weak and all over the place. Poor acting as well.

  2. ๐Ÿ’ชwell done on fasting! I do find fasting sort of reset me. Good to hear your back is getting better. ๐Ÿ‘
You did a great job carving the pork knuckle. Was the bone removed by the kitchen before you cut it? Aha, a dish that Kar hiong didn't do well, brinjal dish.

    1. It is good that you incorporate fasting to your lifestyle. I felt good the past two days of a 24 hour fast. No, the bone was intact. The kitchen did make some cuts to make it easier for us.

  3. Having 2 meaty dishes (pork & chicken) and 2 claypot vegetables will make anyone very full. When ordering 4 dishes, I think a less filling meal would be when one of the protein is fish (or seafood) and the vegetables a simple stir-fry. I personally find dishes too heavy in sauces tend to make me fuller. I can certainly understand why this meal left you overly full and thirsty with a drop in energy coz the dishes were either sticky-sweet or salty. >.<

    1. You are right. The meal was heavy especially with the huge pork knuckle. In fact we could have done well with just that and 2 veggies. Note to self, not to order two heavily sauced veggies!

  4. I saw a few times people "reused" the Christmas tree as "Prosperity Tree" which the ornaments were replaced with CNY themed ones. The pork knuckle looked delightful but the sauce didn't make the crunchy skin wet/soggy?

    1. It is very common these days to see decorative items being recycled. I think it is good but if done too frequently, then it becomes stale LOL! The pork skin was still crunchy in spite of the sauce.
