A Guilty Daughter

Last Saturday I accompanied my mum to the clinic to have her health issues sorted out.

It was a long wait because the doctor is someone who is very dedicated and who spends extra time with her patients to listen to and to advice and give detailed consult.

That is the way doctors should be, not just a 10 minute (or less) "hello-here is your prescription-bye-see you again" kind of doctor.

So after medication was dispensed and payment made, I called my brother to come get my mum. When my brother parked right up front, my mum and I made our way out of the clinic. Mum was following behind me and I proceeded to the car to open the door for her.

Before I could reach the car, I heard mum call out to me. I turned around and my heart sank. My mum was flat on her back on the pavement outside the clinic! I quickly rushed to her. A young lady was by her side and she helped me lift my mum up.

Mum was in a daze but she was able to walk to the car. I made sure she got into the car safely and as my brother drove away I had to hold back tears. I wanted to cry because seeing my mum like that broke my heart. I also felt terrible because I failed to keep an eye on her. Had I been more watchful, walked her out and stayed by her side, she would not have fallen.

When I told my partner what happened, he told me "Ya. It is scary when you come to a point in your life when you realize your parents are not what they used to be. You must always walk side by side with your mum to keep her safe".

My mum has always been someone who is physically sound. At 80 she is not like the typical 80 year old, most are feeble and infirm. That was why I took it for granted about walking out of the clinic to the car parked right up front. What could go wrong? Obviously, anything can.

Let me show you what it is that tripped my mum up.

Steps like that can pose a hazard to older persons. In fact it can be a hazard to anyone who is not careful. So always remember to look down to make sure you navigate yourself safely and when you are with an older person, always keep them close to you to avoid accidents.

I noted most structures in front of shops are not safe for our senior citizens. This sloping structure might be designed for wheelchairs but I feel that the elevation is not quite right.

This morning I accompanied my mum to the clinic again for a follow up. You can be sure that I made sure to stay close to her, even when she went to the toilet, I tagged along LOL! All went well and my brother came to fetch her when she was done.

Today is supposed to be another skip day (fasting for a full day) for me, but I couldn't do it. I was told that when you are under stress, do not fast. So I decided to break my fast and replace the skip day tomorrow.

I guess you can tell where I went to "buka puasa" hah..hah..hah...

There was a leng lui who sat at the table next to mine and when my meal was served, she turned to me and remarked "Wow! That is SO nice! What is that on the menu?" So I told her that's the Really Big Breakfast

After my very satisfying meal, I went for a walk (to burn off the French toast and honey wahahaha!!!) and did another inspection of the mall.

This art studio is opening soon. This is where parents pay money for their children to come and conteng-conteng. Parents these days are very indulgent. Back in the good old days, as long as you are still breathing, that's good enough for them.

I saw a long queue at IlaoIlao (it used to be my favorite place). Then I realized it is the 3rd Wednesday of the month where they offer 33% discount.

This is the day when el cheapos fans of this frozen yogurt come out in droves to enjoy the discount. I used to do that too.

This is Girl napping on the arm rest of my armchair. She pooped on the seat cushion which I tossed in disgust. See the damage she/Belle Belle did to the fabric. Tsk!

I noticed that Belle Belle loves to rest her chin on the staircase railing.

This is how she relaxes.

    1. Your poor mum! Fortunately she is ok and just bruising. What we are scared of is if they break their bones.

  3. Can imagine that you must be 💔 but thankful at the same time that your mom is ok. The clinic must put a sign warning people about that doorway danger. If I am not looking at my feet I will trip too.

    1. Yes, luckily my mum is ok and no bones broken except for a sprain on her left wrist. The doctor (on the second visit and after learning of my mum's fall) did mention that the landlord was not happy with the design of the front step after the renovation was done many years earlier.

  5. I must ask my spouse whether or not he wants to share this super big breakfast with me. I will eat all the toasts and bread while he can have all the pork. Do they use butter to cook the bacon and sausage?

    1. Good idea and the portion is enough for both of you. I can detect the taste of butter in the eggs but not on the bacon and sausage. I know your hubby dislikes butter.

    2. He eats salted scs or anchor butter on bread but dislike the butter taste when butter is used in cooking.

  6. Used to happen to my dad...all the time and these days, it is happening to me. Old folks like me have to be extra careful. The Really Big Breakfast looks good!!!

  7. Old folks cannot afford to fall. I tripped on my garden water hose & dislocated my left elbow one year. The following year I tripped on crawling weed while walking & dislocated the same left elbow again. Now I have weak left elbow & couldn't lift heavy stuff :(.
My cats love to rest their chin on something or on one of their front legs

    1. Oh dear, you must be extra careful. My garden hose is also a tripping hazard and I try to make sure I put it away to avoid any accidents but sometimes I forget. Ah, so cats like to do that. It looks very cute :)

  8. I love your analogy - so long as we're breathing, that's good enough!!! I must tell my kids that.

  9. Incident like this just happened to my mother in law last month and she broke her elbow bone and need to undergo a surgery for that. Good to know that you mom is okay.

  10. I thought the post title meant you felt guilty about eating such a carb-loaded big breakfast....until I read further. Luckily nothing untoward happened to your mom. When my late MIL fell (this was long before her passing), she mentioned to me that nothing (her body lah) was the same after her fall. Even when she recovered, she couldn't recover 100%. So, the elderly has to be extra careful about falls. That's why it's advisable for them to use a tongkat even when they don't need one coz they can use it to help break their fall or give them support.

    1. Oh ya, the doctor did mention to my mum (after she learnt about the fall) that it would be a good idea to use a tongkat. She even told my mum not to be shy about using a tongkat! hah..hah...
