GrabUnlimited : Worth It Or Not?

When Grab launched the GrabUnlimited monthly subscription, I was a bit miffed. Aiya! Why must I pay a subscription to enjoy discounts?

In the past, I used to enjoy the monthly 50% HOTDEALS promo (minimum spend of RM25.00 with discount capped at RM12.50) where I get to use the code 6 times (it used to be 8 prior to that).

So I studied the terms & conditions before signing up. Truth be told, I hate reading T&C and agreements. God knows how many share sale/shareholders' agreements I have had to read during my time and all that legalese give me a headache!

After much contemplation, I signed up. After all, the first month introductory subscription is RM0.99 (RM7.90 thereafter) and I can cancel anytime I want.

heh..heh..heh... So before I tekan-tekan, I have to be careful.

It is important to read the fine print. See? This promotion is not available between 11am - 1pm and 6pm-8pm. Ciss! Kena time restricted pulak. However, you can still enjoy a discount of 38% promo all day long. In addition (for 50%) you are restricted to 4 redemptions only per account.

For the 50% off, the minimum spend is RM20.00 and you get RM8.50 discount plus free delivery fee of up to RM3.00 (total RM11.50).

When I attempted to make an order within the restricted time zone (just to test the system), I get this when I press the offer button :

The 50% off offer is disabled. So I wait and wait until past 1pm.

Ah! I can now select the 50% off.

So what is the quantum of savings between the 38% and 50%?

This order I used 38% off (minimum spend RM25).

Total discount RM10.50.

While this order I used 50% off (minimum spend RM20).

Total discount RM11.50.

Difference of RM1.00 (RM11.50 - RM10.50).

The old 50% Hotdeals discount was RM12.50.

Maximum discount under old 50% Hotdeals = RM12.50, new 50% Hotdeals = RM11.50 and 38% Hotdeals = RM10.50. Differential of RM1.00 at each level, and now they tell you that part of the discount (RM3.00) is applied against delivery fee. Aiyah, just marketing ploy lah

So in conclusion, if you are a Grab user and you choose not to subscribe for GrabUnlimited, then you don't get to enjoy any of those discounts. And if you subscribe, it is worthwhile if you order food frequently. This is one way Grab is trying to shore up more revenue I suppose.  I read recently that their share prices dropped due to decline in earnings.

In summary, what you get with the subscription is as follows (must pay using Grabpay) :

70 Food Vouchers
- 50% off Grabfood Hot Deals (4 vouchers)
- 38% off Grabfood Hot Deals (6 vouchers)
- Free delivery (up to RM3.00) with minimum spend of RM20 (50 vouchers)
- 15% Self Pick Up (up to RM12.00) no minimum spend (10 vouchers)

10 Grab Mart Vouchers
- Free delivery (up to RM3.00) with minimum spend of RM40 (10 vouchers)

1 Ride Voucher
- RM5 off Grab Ride from any Malaysian airport (1 voucher)

So even if I just order one food delivery, my savings of RM10.50 or RM11.50 already covers the RM7.90 subscription. And if I order more (which judging from my mood these days), I benefit more.

Heck I even set up a spreadsheet to track my usage so I can plan my orders properly hah..hah..hah...

  1. 11am - 1pm and 6pm-8pm. Those are our meal times and we can't order anything then. Absurd!!! RM35.40!!!! *faints* Even with the discount, it was way too expensive for just a burger. Hopefully it tasted so good that it was worth it! The patty looked rather dry.

    1. That's the catch - time restriction :( The burger was good, or else I wouldn't spend so much on it.

  2. I think Grab has no choice but to try to mimic ShopeeFood with free delivery and deals at certain meal times and compete with them coz ShopeeFood's discounts are ridiculous sometimes. I think many have switched allegiance to ShopeeFood since (we still use GrabFood & FoodPanda but only once in a while now). You can buy a ShopeeFood Pass for only 10 cents and you get more than 10 pcs of cash & shop discounts + free delivery (you'll be able to see the discount vouchers, usually fast food, before you buy). Even if I don't use up any of the other discounts, I would definitely use the cash discounts (of RM3, 3 pcs) and that's RM9 off for just 10 cents (which is great to buy individual daily meals). ShopeeFood is very ideal for people buying 1 pax meals (and all 3 of us can order what we want invidually with our own accounts...hehe).

    1. I have been exploring ShopeeFood and found some eateries that are not on Grab. I'll be trying their deliveries soon. Must explore other possibilities as Grab is trying to grab more money from me LOL!

  3. Thanks for the details. I order delivery almost every day so this is very good for me. Now with ewew info on shopeefood pass, I will use these 3 apps to get the most benefits from all my food delivery orders. Many Thanks!

  4. i think i would just stick to being non-member of anything, coz i don't order delivery that often. Nowadays i m just looking forward to the Foodpanda e-voucher which offers discount up to RM12 during 3pm-6:30pm time window. And good thing is that it is unlimited use per account.

  5. So many T&C. Now I am thinking not to subscribe. Lol. I stay loyal to Foodpanda for time being. Hehe. Only order food delivery at least once a week or the most twice in a month. Now kids at home, I cook more.

    1. I hear that Foodpanda is better in terms of benefits. If you rarely order delivery, then not necessary to subscribe for any plan.

  6. Wow!! I salute you for all your patience to read the T&C and then produce a spreadsheet to monitor your orders! This is truly a real accountant who pandai to kira to the last dollars and cents. Kikikikiki
I hope you will not get tired later with all their marketing ploy. I am from the advertising background and know how businesses try hard to lure customers by offering freebies, discounts and cookies. I looked through what you have shared and could see how much you really saved if you follow their timing. Either eat much earlier or much later lah.

  8. It really just sounds too complicated for me if there is too much fine print. I need to simplify my life, not complicate it.

    1. You got that right! But all these fine print is unavoidable, unfortunately. Sigh...

  9. For such " complicated" subscription procedures, I'm so lazy to learn and use, LOL Some more I'm not a frequent user of food delivery apps.

    1. Yah, if not frequent user then it is not worthwhile to subscribe. I am very lazy these days and I order delivery quite often. LOL!
