Robataya@1 Utama

I spotted Robataya shortly after it opened at 1 Utama and I thought it had a very Japanese look. On one of our dinner dates, my brother and I went over just to check the menu with a view to a future visit.

So there we were one evening after he picked me up from office.

Robataya is located on the ground floor, next to TGI Fridays and opposite Canton-i.

The menu is like whoa! because it is so extensive. You will  be overwhelmed by the many many choices that confront you. So I suggest you concentrate on the categories that interests you. I mean, you can't eat them all.

For example choose from the sashimi, sumiyaki, tempura, yaki mono etc, you get the idea. Or you might want a bit from a few of the many sections if you come in a big group. That way it is easier to focus.

So for the two of us, we settled on items from the donburi, zensai and special roll section.

My order was the Buta Kyushu Yaki Don (Kyushu Style Grilled Pork Belly on Rice) simply because the photo looked nice. And it came looking more beautiful than the photo.

I thought it tasted wonderful.

My brother selected the Katsu Don (Deep Fried Pork/Chicken Cooked with Vegetables with Egg on Rice).

Not that great, he said.

For sharing, we had the Yaki Gyoza (Homemade Minced Pork and Vegetable Dumplings).

It was all right and served with a vinegar dipping sauce.

Our final item was the Robataya Teppan Roll (Teppan Grilled Sushi Roll with Fresh Salmon, Assorted Fresh Vegetables and Black Sesame).

Look at that. Each roll was topped with bacon! Yums!

This was very nice (even numbers too, 4 for you and 4 for me) but the downside is that the bottom gets charred if left too long on the hot teppan.

Well, I must say that both of us were very pleased with our meal at Robataya and we have to come back to cover more of the menu. After I paid for our dinner, we were give a RM30 voucher to be used at their Publika branch.

I wanted to snap a picture of the restaurant showing their name but no, I could not see it.

Perhaps that is their name in Japanese?

On our way to the carpark, my bro stopped by here for his Rotiboy fix. I did not buy any as I only like the smell, not the taste. In the car, I had a good whiff of the buns and that was  good enough for me hah..hah..

  2. Whoa!! You beat me to post this. Everything in the menu is very delicious and unique. I went there many times and took the photos but never appeared in my blog yet. That's me lah. The signage name is actually on the outer walls facing the open air car park. I actually wanted to talk about its very excellent service and feng shui fountain at the corner of entrance. I could see its crystal ball spinning and the frequency that hovers above. So powderfool!

They have one outlet at Publika which I have yet to try and I think they got their name from the word Robatayaki styled cooking which I enjoyed in Sapporo last year.

(From Google) - Robatayaki is a culinary wonder of Hokkaido, a fire-grilled medley of meat, fish and vegetables emphasizing presentation and flavor.

  4. Ah, after you described its location, I remember seeing it before. I think my spouse would like the dish that you ate but what was the round ball in the middle surrounded by the pork belly? If that ball tastes creamy, then he won't eat that.

    1. Go try it! You will not be disappointed. That ball is actually mashed potatoes. Not, it does not taste creamy.

  5. Your dish tasted better than your brother's coz you ordered their speciality...which is grilled! ;) The restaurant's name means something like 'grilled food over hot charcoal'. This one was on my radar too when they first started in Publika but never got round to it. Ai, why did they give you a voucher to be used in Publika when you dined at 1Utama? Shouldn't they give you one for 1Utama since that is your preference? I think there'll be one more Japanese food post coming up soon? ^_~ Yeah, we used to be able to smell Rotiboy's coffee bun a mile away...now not so far (only in the car)...kekeke! ;D

    1. Oh yes, grilled food is the thing and I bet you will enjoy your experience here. We were told by the server that the Publika outlet will give vouchers for the 1 Utama outlet and vice versa. It's like they are promoting each other. I remember how Rotiboy used to be such a sensation :)

  6. No mention of the prices? Must have cost a bomb as you got a RM30 voucher. Gee! They're good - get you to go and eat at another outlet, spend some more to use the voucher.

    1. Prices are of course on the high side but considered reasonable for an outlet like this. Yup, that voucher is to encourage more spending hah..hah...
