Yellow

My efforts finally paid off. My yellow Hibiscus finally revived and gifted me with a single bloom.

All I did was prune the dying plant and apply compost to the pot. And then I watered it faithfully everyday.

Don't underestimate the potency of compost. This stuff really works! A Japanese bamboo from the office was all dried up and so bare that I thought the plant was a write off. But I took it home and fed it with compost.

Slowly but surely, the plant revived and came back with vigor. The leaves are now dark green and shiny. I was amazed. Too bad I did not take photos to  document it.

I have been collecting my kitchen waste (vegetables and fruits only) for composting. I place a plastic pail by the sink and all my vegetable trimmings and fruit peels go into the pail. That includes egg shells too.

Then I empty the pail into a big flower pot which acts as my compost bin. I cover the kitchen waste with dried leaves and soil from pots which have been exhausted. Once in a while, I give the organic materials a good stir.

Once decomposed and broken down, what I have is rich black compost which I apply to my pots and on the ground where my plants grow. Some of my other plants that have benefited from the compost are my pink Hibiscus and Adenium.

I note that the color of the blooms are deeper and more brilliant.

Another benefit of composting (and separating my paper, plastic and other organic waste) is that I have less rubbish to throw. That saves me a lot of plastic bags which are few and far between now that supermarkets and shops have stopped giving free plastic bags.

    1. Instead of wasting all those organic material, better to reuse as fertilizer :)

  2. What a beautiful bloom! We compost too. Most of our food scraps we just chop and mix in with the soil. The excess we share with a guy who has a bigger space and actually does it properly. Our plants have never looked healthier since we stopped buying fertiliser and using our own food waste.

    1. It's great that you compost too! Artificial fertilizers might contain chemicals that are harmful I think. So compost is a safer bet.

  4. I compost my kitchen scraps too but in a simple way. The plants love the compost. You are rewarded with beautiful flowers and healthy plants for nursing them back to health!

  6. Hola Princess Hong!!! Your flowers are blooming so cantek and the hibiscus looked so molek like pretty roses. How come you don't have Bunga Kantan blooming there?? Has your partner darling used them all on his knees on the floor?

Hey, you are such a magnificent Chef who could stir from kitchen pots to all the garden's flower pots. Sadly, I am only good at stirring my toilet bowls at home. I must learn from you to make compost after my successful potato skin debut last weekend.

  7. You are really good by doing your own compost. I just separate my 'sampah' and throw where they are supposed to be thrown. Doing compost ke apa memang takdalah buatnya, PH.

    1. MD, you tak buat gardening so OK lah tak buat compost. I just thought that since I have empty flower pots and extra earth (because the plants died hah..hah..), so might as well make compost and not waste the vegetable peels etc.
