Sunday's lunch was cooked using my new toy - the Ninja Foodi Air Grill (AG301) (check it out here). I was very attracted to this indoor grill because I love grilled meat.
Seeing that I am now on a meat based diet, an indoor grill would be perfect.
I was lucky and got this unit at RM990.00. My only complaint is the length of the power cord. It is too short.
Although I understand that the idea of a shorter cord is for safety, it has to be of a reasonable length (another 6 inches would have been perfect). With a shorter cord, the placement of your appliance may be restricted.
You need to find a location in your kitchen where the cord can reach the power socket. I prefer to put the unit on my dining table (that's where I used to place my air fryer) but had to put it on the kitchen cabinet counter instead.
After the outer basket is inserted (left) that's how it looks like and on the right, you can see that I have lined the basket with foil.
After that, you can insert the grill rack (left) or air fryer basket (right). After my experience with my two earlier air fryers, I find that it is better not to line the air fryer basket.
Why? So that the air circulation around the food is optimized and the meat browns more evenly. Sure, washing up is easier if you line the basket. With this Ninja Foodi Air Grill, I line the outer basket instead to catch all the oil drippings.
There is a removable splatter guard to protect the heating element. It's a good feature but make no mistake, the heating element (and areas above it) will get oily (eventually). But not as bad as a conventional air fryer. You need to remove and wash the splatter guard after every use.
One of the things I dread when buying a new appliance is learning how to use it. Not only that, I have to figure out the appropriate temperature/time settings to cook my food. Fortunately, usage of this air grill is quite straight forward.
I picked up two deboned chicken legs at Aeon and simply marinated the meat with light soy sauce, garlic powder and pepper.
Once preheated, the unit will display "Add Food". After putting the chicken in and closing the hood, the unit will automatically start grilling.
I added the chicken legs skin side down (there was a nice sizzle!) and flipped at half time. Since this is a test drive, I just eyeballed the time. See the grill marks?
At the end of cooking, I put some butter on the skin (for extra flavor) and lost the grill marks >.< But it doesn't matter. The browning is good.
I also grilled a steak after that (sorry no photo) and at the end of cooking, the fats and drippings were contained in the aluminum foil.
The steak was overcooked and was done medium well. I have to adjust the cooking time in my next attempt.
There was not much sticking to the grill plate (it is ceramic coated) and to wash, I just soaked it in the air fryer inner basket with dishwashing detergent and water. Cleaning is easy.
And yes, I also cleaned the splatter guard by soaking it in soapy water and later cleaning it with my regular sponge.
There is a grilling guide but I still had to make my own adjustment because the quantity and weight of the meat I was cooking is not the same as per the guide.
Suffice to say, the chicken had a very good grilled flavor (the steak too) and was tender and moist. The steak was a bit dry because I overcooked it. I will do better next time!
Oh ya, just in case anyone is wondering, there was hardly any smoke. So yes, I am very happy with my new toy!
What beauties, your chicken!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThanks for showing us your new toy! ;) I prefer a short cord coz too long a cord I end up having to tie parts of the cord together. The thing is the grill (or any kitchen gadget for that matter) is meant to be put on the kitchen cabinet top (hence the short cord) and not the dining table...lol. After seeing the pics you posted, I see a lot of similarities with the air fryer. Even the top of your grill looks exactly like the top of the air fryer (the coil heating element) except for the splatter guard...and maybe this is not fan-based? Your grill rack = the drawer of the air fryer and a similar air fryer basket goes on top. You used to line your air fryer drawer with foil and put food directly into the basket. Same as what you're doing now with your grill. I know it's better not to line the air fryer basket so that hot air can circulate around the food for more even browning. I could do the same like what you did with your air fryer but in the end decided to line my basket with paper liners coz little to no washing won the "argument"..lol (and your grill plate has a lot of ridges to clean)! >.< Surprising I still got decent browning coz the liners are so thin, just have to flip the food a couple times more. I was also worried that constant scrubbing (not initially but over time) would weaken the non-stick coating (as we know marinades can get sticky, that's why we even line our sheet pans!).
ReplyDeleteNow, let's get to the food. Your grilled chicken looks beautiful...as beautiful as your roast chicken which you've always managed to get a good browning too. The only thing that sets this apart could be the taste...does it have a smoky taste since it's grilled, not roasted/baked? As muh as I love grilled food, I've to limit my intake of BBQ-ed meats for the very reason of too much browning from grilling for fear of it being carcinogenic (my sisters-in-law will actually flip when they see burned bits on their food...they'll peel every bit off...lol). But since you're a carnivore and you enjoy meats with more browning, you'll have lots of fun with your new toy. Enjoy! ^_~
Wah, I like your long comment! I know lah, those things are supposed to put on the kitchen cabinet top hah..hah... but my dining table is pushed against the wall and kebetulan got a power socket up there. I figured why not cook and serve my food at the dining table, which was how it was with the previosu two air fryers. Yes, there is a lot of similarities between this air grill/air fryer and other air fryers. Only thing is that it has a flip top opening (rather than drawer) and can go up to 260C.
DeleteOh ya, with air fryer I can also get good browning with chicken but not with steak. And yes, there is a smoky taste. I agree with you that the excess charring is not good for us, my partner dislikes it and will say that it causes sore throat! So I will be careful not to overdo it. And yes, I am enjoying my grilled meats hee..hee...
Indoor grill sounds like good idea to own. My man and I did planned to invest in an outdoor grill/BBQ in the past but luckily we didn't get one. Not sure how frequent will we be using it. Now that you are more protein based, investing in this grill is good. Can't wait to read more of your experiment with your new toy.
ReplyDeleteI used to watch one program on TV where the chef specialize in grills. Can't remember the name of the show. I think it is nice to have an outdoor grill but like you said, we may not use it that often. So this indoor one is a good alternative.
DeleteI have to look at your photos twice only can understand how's the air grill functions, so lame, haha! With both grill and air fry function, this air grill machine definitely in my consideration if my old AF die on me (of course I don't wish this will happen so soon, hehe :P).
ReplyDeleteLOL! Yes, it is a worthwhile buy should you ever need it.
DeleteWah, thanks for showing us your new toy! I am definitely not cleaning it though it is easy according to you.
ReplyDeleteLOL! No need for you to buy it since you don't cook.
