My Last Ayam Penyet?

How many times have I had Ayam Penyet? Many times but maybe less than ten. Each time I came away with okay....maybe it could be better or it was just all right.

Maybe this is why I keep trying it every now and then hoping to find one that I can finally say, yes! This is good!

So I ordered this Ayam Bakar Penyet from Penyet Jakarta by The Majapahit via Grabfood. No, there were no promotions for this one and I ordered it simply because I didn't know what to eat.

I also put in an order for the Terung Penyet.

It's a sambal terung which I must say was very delicious. It looks watery, not like the usual sambal terung I am used to but it was not short on flavors. It was the only thing I enjoyed from this order.

The soup that came with this order was terrible. It tasted strongly of turmeric and was very, very salty. So I threw it away.

The chicken was hard and on the dryside. There was also a piece of fried tofu and tempeh in the box (and a thin slice of cucumber/tomato and some slivers of raw cabbage) and if there is anything nice I can say, the sambal was really good. That's it.

I'm quite certain I won't say never to Ayam Penyet. Who knows one day I might find one that I might impress me.

These are my few documented experience with Ayam Penyet :

    7. Wow! Wow! Hello Libby! This place has become a forum chat for you? Wakakakaka I am glad I came here to say Hello to you Libby. Hope you will come back to blogging again. I lost my mojo for a while which I blamed the long anaesthetic effects and loss of blood that made my brains out of alignment. I am dragging myself back to my feet and old self again with all the encouragement from few silent blog readers who "missed me" pula. It made me feel so appreciated. Muahahahaha

      COME BACK LIBBY!!!!

  3. ayam penyet is never in my food choice. I had ayam penyet around 2-3 times (in different restaurants) and dislike it totally. Maybe that is how it should taste like, i mean the chicken is meant to be hard and dry(?) which is not suitable to my palate. To most of us, a chicken should never be 'penyet', it must be meaty and succulent.

    1. LOL! I never understood why they have to penyet the chicken. But I do like their style of sambal.

  4. I love ayam penyet. The flavourful, spiced chicken and ulam. I had it last month. My favourite one used to sell at RM10, and then RM12. Now, selling at RM14. Cannot eat so often. Lol

    1. Good that you will still try new eateries for ayam penyet to try to find a good one. I don't dare to buy any for fear that if he doesn't eat it then I have to eat it.

  7. I love to eat Ayam Penyet more than our chicken rice or KFC. I didn't see this Ayam Penyet when I was younger until when the Indons swarmed our country and mushroomed it. I only found out this fact not long ago. I was very surprised to see Ayam Penyet being sold in the whole lengths of Indonesia from Jakarta City to the smallest huts in Pulau Belitong. Baru I tahu, that might be the Indon's signature dish.

Please visit Jogyakarta someday to see Borobudur and eat all their native food with plenty of sambal spread. I believe you will love them because their dishes have similarities to Thai, Kelantanese and Terengganu styled but I would say their varied Indon tastes are stronger like volcanoes. I concluded Jogyakarta as ideal after trying few towns.
