Nasi Lemak Bamboo, SS2

Last Saturday, I was pleasantly surprised when my partner suggested Nasi Lemak Bamboo@SS2. My lahling is not very adventurous when it comes to dining out. The only other time that he surprised me was Valentine's Day last year.

Again, he got to know about this place via his high school whatsapp group. SS2 is a very congested place and parking is usually a big problem. So I suggested that we must go early to avoid stress.

I have not been to SS2 in a long time. I noted that there are quite a number of restaurants that were not there previously. Perhaps we should come to SS2 and try more restaurants instead of heading to 1 Utama all the time.

Ordering at Nasi Lemak Bamboo is done at the cashier up front. The specialty here is obviously the Nasi Lemak Bamboo which my partner expected me to order. He was under the impression that I watched the video that he forwarded to me. Actually, he didn't forward that video to me hah..hah..

I wished that he had spoken up and prompted me but he did not. So I got both of us the Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng. I also ordered the Cucur Udang for sharing and a Cendol Original each. After paying, you have to wait for the order number (printed on the receipt) to be called and collect your orders yourself.

We waited quite a bit and when our order was ready, the number displayed did not tally with our order number. Luckily the restaurant was not too busy or else things would get really confusing.

I'm afraid the nasi lemak is not visually pleasing.

The ayam goreng berempah was a tad over fried and my partner's was burnt on one side. The rice is fragrant enough but overall both of us agreed that the nasi lemak is not outstanding. It was just so so.

The cucur udang fared much better. It was adequately seasoned, very crunchy and with good distribution of small prawns.

It was served with Thai chili sauce.

I requested for the cendol to be prepared after our main meal. When we were done with our mains, I went to the counter to request for the cendol. The staff who prepared the cendol brought the dessert to our table.

The cendol consisted of shaved ice (drizzled with santan), red beans and gula Melaka. The gula Melaka had a deep (almost smoky) flavor which I disliked. The only positive note is that this cendol is not overly sweet, just nice.

The shaved ice is very coarse and you will get a mouthful of miniature ice cubes.

I'm afraid we were not wowed by the food. I did mention to my partner that if the food is good, we might consider coming back for the Nasi Lemak Bamboo. But I think not.

We took a short walk along the row of shops to check out other restaurants.

We are considering coming to SS2 again for dinner, perhaps for rice and dishes, something that my partner appreciates.

A sneak peak into Belle Belle's story. This is her after being let out of the carrier that evening. She wanted to go out.

  1. Normally I would be drooling away but lately I have been staying away from anything iced...and anything sweet. Old age! My life is so sad!!! SS2 used to be the place to be when it came to food...a long time ago, mid-80's.

    2. LOL! That was so long ago. It is still a place for makan but I rarely ventured due to traffic congestion.

  2. The Nasi Lemak bamboo has only the seafood curry as accompaniment? Maybe the seafood curry is the special thing that is a must try. Ah, was your partner very disappointed that you did not order the nl bamboo with seafood curry?

    1. I think so, since he thought I would order that. Actually I did not even notice the nasi lemak bamboo when I looked at the menu. They should have listed it right at the top. LOL!

  3. For cendol, the gula melaka is very important to me. I only like the gula melaka that is used by teochew chendol. The gula melaka used by the cendol place in happy mansion I don't like although many ppl say that cendol is best. Burnt gula melaka taste most likely I don't like. Thanks for your review.

    1. Ah, the gula melaka must have been burnt, that's why it tasted strange.

  5. Thank you thank you for getting Belle Belle to the vet cos she looks much better now in the photo. Thank you also for keeping her indoors despite her protests. It is for her own good, tough love. Belle Belle, please be a good girl and don't ask to go out. This is your home, Belle Belle. Your mommy loves you a lot and all her readers and your fans are cheering for you to get well and be in the best of health! Lots of love. ❤️πŸ’πŸ’“

  7. Unlike you and your partner, me and my husband would never order the same thing (haha!)...and that's because we want to taste as many varieties as possible so that we can 'eliminate' the not good ones (faster). I agree, your ayam goreng berempah looks a bit burnt. I think you were unlucky coz some of the photos I've seen they aren't like that. Perhaps they didn't change the oil later in the day.

This nasi lemak place must be new (I've not been to PJ for a year now ever since MCO started). Ah, I think your partner will enjoy Madam Leow's Chinese food (not fantastic but certainly better than average). I did like the garlic chicken & wine and the fried ckt (if it's still the same stall, Igor).

Glad to see you've finally managed to trap Belle. Don't give in to her "trying to look sad look"...cats are like that. When Cookie is in the house, he'll sit by the door too asking to be let out and when he's outside he sits by the door (after a while) asking to be let in. It's just how they are.

    1. I am guessing (hoping) that my partner will take me to Madam Leow's this weekend hee..hee... Yup, I should have ordered different nasi lemak for me and him. That evening I was a little bit kepala pusing because Belle Belle was awful at the vet's (I will blog about it). Much worse than previous visits and I was actually embarrassed and felt very bad for the vet and his assistant... Plus Belle was in the car and I was a bit stressed.

Oh, Cookie does that too, eh? Girl is notorious for that. When she is out, less than 5 minutes later she wants to come in again. And the process repeats. It is very annoying and I have since ignored her. She will whine and go upstairs to sulk. Haiz...

    1. You mean Village Park? That is in Damansara Uptown and it is always very packed and crowded. That's why I never bother to go there. LOL!

  10. the nasi lemak does look ordinary....I think those banana leaf wrapped ones look better than that. But i don't mind eating ordinary nasi lemak coz i like spicy sambal. Good to hear that Belle is back home!

  11. For a restaurant that have Nasi Lemak as their signature dish (as the name implies) but fail to impress the customer with it >_<

    1. Exactly. Maybe their nasi lemak bamboo (with seafood curry) is nice but I will never find out. LOL!
