I walked past Tono@Damansara Uptown recently and noticed that they are now open for dine in. So I walked in because I wanted to have a second go at the Tono Signature tofu-fah.
I wanted to taste it again because the first time I had it was takeaway and I wanted to see the difference if I dined in.
Inside the space is small but cosy. Ipoh Tuck Kee is just next door, visible from the frosted window. You order and pay at the counter and wait for you number to be called.
You order will appear from the hole in the wall hah..hah..
There you have it, my tofu-fah served in a "gold" edged bowl and a "gold" spoon to boot heh..heh...heh...
Sure beats eating from a plastic tub!
Now what is that green thing poking out of my tofu-fah?
Seriously! Daun sup lah! I promptly removed it. I know what they are trying to do, put some green to freshen the look. But really, if at all, use mint, but even then it doesn't go with tofu-fah.
Eating the Tono Signature at the shop immediately after it was served made a lot of difference. The brown sugar and crushed peanuts made this dessert very enjoyable. Then there is the soft tofu-fah with chewy taro ball and peach gum for textural effect. Yeah, I liked it a lot. Enjoyed it much much better than the first time.
This fancy dessert I will reserve as a once in a while special treat.
So you have a verdict? Who is the winner? Soylab or Tono?
ReplyDeleteCan't compare because the dessert is different. I would say I like both!
DeleteNot a fan of those bubbles, love tofu fa on its own. Some places use daun sup for presentation, gets on my nerves if it sticks out like a sore thumb, not appropriate at all!
ReplyDeleteI don't mind those chewy balls, I quite like it.
DeleteAh, I see that eating with our eyes is just as important as eating with our mouths. It's the whole experience that counts! ;) When something is presented to us beautifully (in this case served to you in a golden bowl with a golden spoon), they get off to a good start already (just like good service when you enter restaurants). The previous one in a plastic container, I noticed there's more liquid, so perhaps this cold dessert doesn't travel that well. ^_~ Maybe they should reconsider if they want to do delivery service in case there are customers who don't think it's all that special (after eating it via delivery) and who won't think of returning (unlike you) for a dine-in experience that may change their minds. >_<
ReplyDeleteIndeed! It was a big difference eating in and takeaway. These type of desserts don't travel well and you are right that Tono should consider not having this on delivery menu but then again, they will want to maximize sales.
DeleteWah very atas punya taufufa...so mch ingredients and pricey too. I prefer taufufa in its ori form with white sugar...so this is not for me.
ReplyDeleteMe too but once in a while I like this kind of fancy stuff.
DeleteLike the look of the dessert bowl. But rrally, no need the leaf in the tofu fa. Haha.
ReplyDeleteThe leaf make no difference hah...hah..
DeleteTakeaway food and dine in definitely make a lots of different, in terms of appearance and flavours. For dessert like Tau Foo Fah (with fancy condiments), I will choose not to takeaway, unless those plain one with only the Tau Foo Fah and syrup.
ReplyDeleteI noticed there's a bottle on your table, was it some sort of sauce you can add into your TFF?
You are right, plain one is ok to takeaway. The bottle was my soya bean drink.
DeleteI do not really know how to apprepriate those chewy balls, i also prefer tff in its original form.
