Hainan Joy Cafe

It was Sunday and lunch is usually chap fan at Restoran 134@Taman Megah. But guess what? My lahling suggested that we try something different. Oh?

He did mention the previous week that maybe we check out Hainan Joy Cafe@Taman Megah. As usual, I thought he was just saying, so I did not take it seriously. "You always want to try something new, isn't it?" he asked. Maybe he has been reading my blog wahahahaha....

So there we were.

I could not take better pictures of interior as the place was full of people. The decor is very ancient, drab and old school. In other words, not instagrammable, if you get the drift. If it is ambiance you are looking for, this ain't the place.

But I don't care much for aesthetics. The most important thing for me is the food and service.

We ordered a hot teh o kosong to share.

I was very tempted to order nasi lemak but chose the Hainan Chicken Chop instead. And surprise surprise, my partner opted for the same. I thought he would go for noodles, rice or porridge.

The chicken chop comprised of a battered and deep fried deboned chicken leg, a fried egg, a slice of tomato, fries and baked beans. I assume that the sauce on the chicken is mushroom sauce judging from the slices of canned mushrooms. But frankly, I could not make out the taste of the sauce.

I wished that I could say that the Hainan Chicken Chop was very good (I had high hopes since this is Hainan Joy Cafe after all) but I'm afraid it was not. It was below average and the chicken smelt and tasted of rancid oil. I had to pour chili sauce to make it go down easier.

Judging from the number of people at the cafe, I can only assume that there might be better fare on the menu. Maybe we will come back for something else.

As we were walking to the car, my partner playfully asked "Eh, don't you want to take a picture of the signboard?". How sweet. So I did. Click!

  1. Drool! Drool! I had Hainan pork chop in Penang, so nice...and the place I went to was so cheap too. Heard it has since closed down, so sad.

  2. I'm sorry to hear that the Hainanese chicken chop here didn't bring you joy! >_< It wouldn't bring me joy either with a plate that looks like what a western stall would churn out...with frozen fries, canned beans and a brown sauce with slices of mushroom thrown in that don't even looks home-made. I wish someone can bring you to try Yut Kee's version where the sauce will set it apart from other home-styled chicken chop. Actually, I'm not surprised at all that your partner chose the chicken chop too since this is obviously done Chinese-style which is his cup of tea...kekeke! ;)

    1. Yup, it was just a run of the mill chicken chop and I had hoped for better. I do wish I could go to Yut Kee but it's a bit out of the way and neither my brother nor my partner would want to venture out there. Your observation of the chicken chop being done Chinese style and therefore favored by my partner is quite amusing hah..hah...

  6. I haven't had Hainanese chicken chop for a long time. I used to go to a place that serves good chicken chop. I think I will have to visit again to see if the taste is still good.

  9. Normally I'll ask my partner what he will be ordering and I'll try not to order the same item, unless I really like that particular dish, so I can try more variety :P
