One evening (during Ramadan) I was craving for McDonald's burger. Yup, I get this type of cravings every now and then.
So in the car, I told my partner. He is always very obliging and indulgent and he drove to the McDonald's drive thru in Bandar Utama.
Adoi! It was closed for renovation. Since there was a KFC nearby at Centrepoint, my partner offered to get me a KFC meal.
I seldom think of KFC these days. Back when I was in secondary school, this was a sensation. My family hardly ate out back then (only when invited by my uncle and auntie) and we bought KFC only once. I still remember not having enough to eat. We only got two pieces each I think.
During visits to my auntie's house, sometimes she would have KFC which she tapau for her children. There were always extras and I treasured those times when I could enjoy a piece of KFC though it was leftovers and the chicken was cold.
So anyway, back to present day, when I have enough money to eat as much KFC as I wanted. My partner left me to enjoy the KFC. He got me the dinner plate - three pieces of original fried chicken, a bun, coleslaw, mashed potatoes and a drink.
I sat down to eat and somehow it was not as enjoyable as it used to be. When I was studying at UKM, I used to take the bus with my friend Hoon Boon to Kajang and have dinner at KFC. She loved the coleslaw but the one I had in my box that evening was not good.
I used to love the mashed potatoes but I did not enjoy the one I had that evening. Not even the bun and not even the chicken. So is it me or is KFC not as good as before?
I thinks it is me lah. Grown older, changed tastebuds. So my late grandpa was right. He used to say, when you are young, eat as much of the food that you enjoy because when you grow old, you won't enjoy it anymore.
So with that, I am going to Mr Tuk Tuk tomorrow for my Thai food fix before I start to lose it for Thai food. Haiz.........
I don't remember when the last time I had fried chicken from KFC. None of my family members like it so I hardly buy it.
ReplyDeleteThai food does sound better than the fried chicken. Lol.
Happy weekend.
I guess I won't be buying KFC anymore hee..hee...
DeleteI cannot recall exactly when it was, the last time I had KFC. I remember my missus bought some home and the chicken was so fat and the meat was like jelly - really made me want to throw up. I never wanted to eat it ever again.
ReplyDeletePlus it's not cheap!!! Here, the current craze is RM2 per piece of chicken, regular or spicy. They say it is nice but no, thank you. A rose by any other name - at the end of the day, it's just...fried chicken. The mere smell of the oil from the frying puts me off.
Ah... like jelly! That's what I experienced too. No more KFC for me.
DeleteIt's both. As we grow older, our tastebuds change and we appreciate the finer things in life (coz, like you said, we also now have more cha ching in our pockets). For me, personally, my taste buds have been 'elevated' from all the good (and sometimes expensive) food I've tried since I started blogging about food...even cheap steaks or commercialised ingredients in a big breakfast can't get me excited these days. Well, I guess that's the price we have to pay for eating better.
ReplyDeletePlus, I think KFC nowadays don't taste as good as they used to be...though I'm sure the Colonel's secret recipe of 11 herbs & spices still remain to this day (maybe some outlets are better at frying them than others). I find the original isn't as crispy and sometimes they have too much fat. I also don't remember the bun to be so dry and crumbly. >_< I see you got yourself the Hot & Spicy (I don't normally eat this flavour as I find the batter is a bit too thick and sometimes hard) and, if you don't specify the cut you want, KFC counter staff is very good at off-loading the breast meat on you (which I think you got too), so maybe that contributed to the underwhelming taste as well.
I'll have to agree with you on that. Like you, now I don't enjoy those ordinary big breakfasts anymore.
DeleteYup, KFC isn't what I remembered it to be. And I have the same opinion as you about the Hot & Spicy one. I guess no more KFC for me after this.
I still like KFC original. I think maybe KFC spicy chicken would have fared better with you but since you can cook so well, your rendang chicken and roasted chicken would beat KFC hands down so it is no wonder that you don't like KFC anymore.
ReplyDeleteI think it is more my tastebuds changed and maybe KFC standards dropped a bit too.
DeleteI prefer Texas Chicken these days.
ReplyDeleteI should go back and try Texas Chicken.
DeleteYes, I used to be love KFC Original Flavour fried chicken, and now I don't like it anymore as I found that the chicken they use are soft and have "funny" taste & texture >_<
ReplyDeleteYes, the texture if too soft. Taste also not exciting.
DeleteI always enjoy KFC but i think the standard has dropped compared to past years. I prefer original version as the crispy version is kind of hard and spicy for me. And i always ask for thigh.
ReplyDeleteI think I give up of KFC LOL!
DeleteI think I was in KFC last time like a decade or so ago:)
ReplyDeleteWow that's a long time ago LOL!
DeleteIt has to be at least 30 years since I last ate anything from Maccas or KFC.
ReplyDeleteOh, I see that you are not a fan hah..hah...
DeleteIt is true that the bread, coleslaw, mashed potato are not as good as those days. We do go for KFC but only once in a blue moon. Now when we have so many varieties of delicious food to choose from, we hardly think of KFC.
ReplyDeleteYou are right, there are many other places better than KFC.
