After trying the souffle pancakes at Hotcake and then reading about Soyffle Pancakes at Soylab, I simply had to give Soylab@Damansara Uptown a go.
After my morning weigh-in (hah..hah... I weigh myself and check my body fat percentage once week, what a laugh, right?) which revealed that my weight and body composition is fairly stable (thanks to intermittent fasting), I decided to go ahead and eat dinner at Soylab.
It was something like 4:00pm when I got there and the place was buzzing with tables occupied by groups of two or more. Admittedly, I was very jakun because I was not sure what was the ordering procedure.
Apparently, you order from the window outside, pay and then the nice cashier will give you the receipt and your table number.
So I went inside and took a seat to enjoy my "Bean Looking for Her" (regular RM9.00) which is their signature soymilk and freshly cooked pearls with homemade brown sugar syrup. It was quite nice except that I thought the soymilk was a little thin. Maybe that's due to the ice. The pearls were pleasantly soft and chewy.
When I ordered the Signature Soyffle Pancake (RM22.00), I was informed that it would take 30 minutes to serve. I was fine with that as I was not in a hurry to go anywhere. So while waiting, I just looked around.
These two pretty girls took the table in front of me and when their dessert was served, it emitted smoke.
They were quite fascinated and from their reaction, this must be their first time having this dessert, the Soy Nice.
Then the two leng luis moved to the table next to mine. By then the smoke had died down. If I have a chance, I'd like to share this dessert with my brother. Wait lah. If he drops by my office.
After a long (but worthwhile) wait, my order was served looking really pretty.
Three soyffle (soy souffle pancakes) unsullied by any sauce save for a dollop of soy foam and dusted with powdered sugar. I was really looking forwards to digging in.
The pancakes were really lovely. The texture was soft, cottony and fluffy pretty much like Japanese Cotton Sponge Cake.
The taste is pleasantly eggy, very good eaten just as it is. But since some syrup was provide, I drizzled some over the pancakes.
Compared to the texture of the souffle pancakes at Hotcake, this one is more "compact" and not floppy. Which do I prefer? This Soylab one wins hands down to me.
As for the soy soft serve, it was all right and not too sweet though it is not as smooth and creamy like regular ice cream.
Well, that was a happy dinner don't you think? I'll be back for sure to check out the other soy delights.

I don't think I can eat something sweet for dinner...though your dinner was more like tea-time at 4pm! :D Wah, these people no need to work wan, izzit? I'm assuming students...even then students nowadays have it so good with plenty of cha-ching (unlike our time) >_<
ReplyDeleteThey must be students, all very young looking. These days kids are a fortunate lot. Some have supplementary credits cards (from mum or dad)/generous cash allowance, something unthinkable during our time.
DeleteIf it's like Japanese baked cheese cake, then I am sure I will like it! Looks good, nice presentation. I am curious about the dessert the girls had. Go, go and order that and blog about it.
ReplyDeleteYour girl would love it too!
Deleteooo, this has been one of uptown's biggest successes of the past eight months, i think - they're still going strong after the initial rush of curious customers. kudos to them for offering a distinctive and well-executed concept! :)
ReplyDeleteThey are doing it right, quite well managed I must say. Service is efficient and as soon as a table i vacated, their staff spring to action to clean up unlike some places that I have visited.
DeleteOh good, you managed to visit and try out the soyffle pancakes. Now I want to try another combination of the soyffle pancakes. I am so envious of you because you can go eat at this place any weekday that you want whereas I don't know when I can go there again since I don't drive and I don't grab so I have to wait for someone to go Starling to hitch a ride there. Still did not manage to spot you yet. Maybe one day if got yuen, hehehehe.
ReplyDeleteI don't drive either hee..hee... Yes, who knows one day we might bump into each other :)
DeleteNow i am craving for some soyffle pancakes looking at your photos. I have seen those desserts with thick smoke at our ramadan bazaar, wonder what they are, must be icy cold.
ReplyDeleteDry ice. Very dramatic effect hee..hee..
DeleteI guess the smoke is effect of nitrogen. To make the presentation more dramatic.
ReplyDeleteSoy based pancake, hmm. Healthier alternative.
From the taste, can't tell the difference between milk or soymilk.
DeleteNow you made me wanna try them too!
ReplyDeleteGo and try! Very nice.
DeleteNow I am really curious and want to try the pancake. Too bad none in Ipoh!
ReplyDeleteIf they are successful, maybe they will open more branches.
DeleteFirst time visiting your blog. Nice content! I have yet to try soylab but after reading your blog, I am definitely going there to try their pancakes! :D
ReplyDeleteHi Henry! Thanks for dropping by. You must go to Soylab and do a review hee..hee..
DeleteI still have not tried these souffle pancakes but really want to.
ReplyDeleteI bet you would love them!
DeleteWant to visit this place for the longest time but the crowd seem like not subdue yet (during weekends) :(
ReplyDeleteWeekdays pun so many people and I would imagine it is almost next to impossible at the weekends >.<
