My El Cheapo Lunch

When I went to Mama Dessert I noted that they sold economy noodles. So I decided to swing by and have a cheaper lunch heh...heh...

There are two types of noodles, meehoon and mee. Two are non-spicy while the other two are fried with chili paste.

I settled on the plain one and I could not resist adding sambal egg and luncheon meat.

I love bubur cha cha, so I had that too, although this is not the best bubur cha cha I have had.

It was nice enough.

This meal cost me RM9.00.

Then a few days later I went back to try their mee siam and I asked to mix with a fried mee.

I was very hungry and added an egg, luncheon meat and sausage hee...hee...

The mee siam was quite bland and tasted like ordinary fried meehoon. The sausage was quite awful while the luncheon meat was just so so. I know I can't expect much.

Bubur cha cha again. At least I enjoyed this one. This lunch cost RM10.50.

It was filling, so I walked away happy. I don't think I will have this again but I would come back for the set meals and bubur cha cha.

Then I discovered that Kahuna Poke has closed down.

  1. I wouldn't think the mee hoon or mee and egg and luncheon meat would be filling enough for you but add a bowl of tong sui would be fine cos water liquid is filling.

    1. If it was just meehoon and nothing else, I would still be hungry. With the add-ons, it was just nice.

  4. Hmmm, RM10.50 for economy noodles isn't so economical after all. And to have it eat it with bottled chilli sauce tells me a lot about the taste of the noodles. For that price, can get a good plate of chap fan already! There are 5 pots of tong sui to choose from but I see you love bubur cha cha as much as me...hee..hee (always my first pick). ^_~

I remember you liking Kahuna Poke very much :) Why is it that the places that receive a glowing review from you tend to close...wahahahaha! :D Must be the area...Uptown is very competititve. Those in my area that gets a thumbs down from me (almost) always end up closing (perhaps not so competitive as your area)...muahahahaha! ;P The most recent one to bite the dust...Love Mee Soybean Noodles! >_<

    1. The taste was just so so. I have had much better tasting economy noodles.

Well, maybe I am jinxed and jinxed those restaurants hahaha!!But no, let me explain. Some of these restaurants I reviewed were new and the food was good, service pleasant. But unfortunately they did not stay that way.

Case in point, the recently demised Kahuna Poke. On repeat visits, I noticed the portion of ingredients getting smaller. In the beginning, the boss did the serving. Then he hired a staff to take care of service. But he failed to check if the staff was dishing out proper portions. I remember getting a scant teaspoon of spring onions and very small portions of other add-ons. I did not get what I paid for. When that happens, customers don't come back and I actually stopped visiting.

Another favorite that died, Ampersand failed because the chef was hardly there and left the kitchen to be run by two foreign workers. I also stopped visiting when the quality of food deteriorated.

But surprisingly, those that I dislike are still kicking hah...hah...

    2. Those that you dislike are still kicking? That means your taste buds must be in the minority...haha! :D

People who open cafes & restaurants but have no passion for it shouldn't open one. If they're not there to oversee, they must at least do quality control periodically.

By the way, I'm not one to believe that their staff will dish out smaller portions unless the boss tell them to do so. Most of the time, they'll give more coz they couldn't care less as they don't have to bother about the cost of food + they don't get a share of the profits anyway...kekeke! ;)

    3. hah..hah... think so :)

True true. I have experienced staff dishing out more and also staff dishing out less. Depends on my luck I suppose hah..hah...

  6. My wife loves to eat this type of economy Meehoon & Mee at the coffee shop in my neighbourhood. Someone told me that this kiam siap dish originated from Penang's kiam siap lang and they often served with salted fried crispy bean curd skins. Sure boh I asked?? I would not deny as only Penang has these economy stalls everywhere in the morning since I was a kid.

I just tried the poke meals recently at the Greens which is a few shops away from your favourite Yik Kee Restaurant. It is very delicious and expensive but full house daily!! Bye bye Kahuna Poke.

  9. oh no, re kahuna poke - i remember it opened around oct or nov last year, so this has only been about eight months. i never did manage to try it, but i guess the market for poke bowls in the klang valley isn't really there - so maybe nobody should open any more poke bowl places!

    1. I think there is a market for Poke Bowl, maybe not that big, but the main drawback I feel is that it is too expensive. Besides that location they were at is a little quite and does not draw the office crowd.

  10. There's no reason to go hungry in Malaysia. You can certainly find some very reasonably priced meals here.
