Jay Chou Likes This? Liang Sandwich Bar@The Starling

I have read about Liang Sandwich Bar and the roti canai-like sandwich wrap. Then the next thing I know, an outlet opened at The Starling last year.

There was a crowd initially and I decided to let the excitement cool down before I paid a visit. Honestly, from what I have read, I did not think that the sandwich fillings were anything that I would fancy. But apparently, it is a favorite of a certain Taiwanese artiste.

Jay Chou. I don't listen to Chinese songs but I know who he is.

Looking at the menu, nothing really caught my eye. At first I asked for the Chicken Patty (RM9.90) but I was informed that it was unavailable.

So I asked for a recommendation. The lady told me that the Liang Chicken Sandwich (RM9.90) was their bestseller, so that's what I had. For drinks, I picked the Organic Soya (RM3.90).

I had to wait quite a bit for my food. I noted there were a few bottles of sauces at the counter and I was not sure if I could choose or the sauce was already designated to each type of filling. Then I noted that the lady squeezed some sauce into my sandwich without any reference to me.

So there you have it. The sandwich is placed in a paper packet and it is not so easy to eat.

I had to tear the paper as it was quite hard to maneuver the sandwich.

Then I lifted the "roti canai" to see the filling.

A few slices of chicken, lettuce and sauce. Upon tasting, it was hoisin sauce. Not my favorite sauce for a sandwich. The "roti canai" wrap was nice as it was crispy and light. I just thought that the choice of fillings weren't that great.

I love soya bean milk but I did not like the taste of this one.  It's not fresh soya milk but those in powder form mixed with hot water. After two sips, I abandoned my drink.

Well, suffice to say, one visit just to satisfy my curiosity is enough for me.

I had to eat something to kill the taste of the hoisin sauce and the soya bean milk. So .....

Peanut Butter Chocolate and Very Berry Strawberry (RM14.84) hee..hee...

  1. I ate it once and I ordered the Jay Chou's favourite at MYR 9.90 nett which by right should be Liang Chicken Sandwich but looking at your photo, I think I got duped. Yours look like slices chicken meat whereas mine look like chicken ham. I think they duped me and gave me the cheaper chicken ham and egg sandwich (MYR 6.90 nett). The question is should I buy the Chicken meat one again to try? I think yours has egg inside too, right?

    1. Mine had no eggs. If you ask me, I don't think it is worth it for you to buy the chicken slices.

  4. Like you, the fillings didn't excite me as they were pretty much all processed food. Oh, you should have gone for the basic scallion one which I thought was rather nice (I had one with egg and that was it). Try the plain one (and have two...kekeke!) if you decide to give it another go. Actually, yours looked like it had a layer of omelette too. They used to allow you to choose two sauces but I don't see that on the menu board, so maybe that has changed (since she also did not ask you what sauce you preferred). Or perhaps the default sauce is liang (aka hoisin) sauce (which I didn't try since I didn't know what liang sauce was then).

  8. Same here, once is one time too many. Not anything to shout about plus it is very expensive.

  9. You know that I have walked pass this shop many times but never stepped inside. That's because you didn't share any reviews to prompt me to eat too. Now they have lost 2 customers at one go!
This brand is selling well in Taiwan and I wonder how on earth their folks love to eat them. Maybe they have different menu... Oh well, I will be in Taipei next weekend and hope to take a look at their menu there.

    1. If you tried the one in Taipei, please report back what you think. I am curious. Maybe Taiwanese tastebuds different from us.
