Lost on Chinese New Year Day : Ra-ft Cafe@Lorong Binjai

I suggested to my brother that we should go for brunch on the first day of Chinese New Year. Since KL is normally very quiet during the festive season, we ought to take the opportunity to venture out to Ra-ft Cafe@Lorong Binjai. To my delight, my brother agreed.

Our drive down to KL was smooth. However, my brother seldom goes to KL and he had to rely on Waze. I don't drive and I noted that though Waze is very helpful, still, sometimes it can be confusing.

When it tells you "in 300m turn left into jalan what-what-what", you need to be able to estimate the distance and sometimes, you may be faced with two turnings to the left  (which one? which one?) and our KL road signs are not always helpful.

So we got lost. My brother took an incorrect turn and ended up heading towards KLCC. But Waze re-calibrated and directed us in the right direction.

I made reservations to ensure that we got a seat.

We already made up our minds that we wanted the RA-FT Breakfast (big breakfast) with pork sausages and sunny side up eggs.

We must have coffee, a Latte for him and a Long Black for me. That's kind of our standard order for coffee as you may have noticed.

I like coffee art and I admire the people with skills to do this.

Look at that. Doesn't that look scrumptious?

I loved everything on my plate. My brother has a fondness for smoked sausages and though this sausage met with his approval, he still prefers the one at Three Little Pigs and The Big Bad Wolf

With such a loaded plate, you would think that we would not have space for dessert. But no. Those of you who are familiar with us know that we are super tankers. Therefore dessert was the next agenda.

Initially we wanted the Tiramisu and Pavlova with Fresh Fruits. But the server came back to inform us that the pavlova was not available. So we settled on the Ra-ft Bird Nest with Vanilla Ice Cream, which the server described as being similar to churros (but shaped as a nest).

This was alright, the pastry was light and went well with the ice cream.

The Tiramisu was lovely as it was light and creamy, though I found the lady fingers were a tad too damp. Other than that, it was very nice.

My brother loved the coffee so much that he had another one. Yes, the coffee here is excellent.

We left happy and if we are to return to Ra-ft Cafe, we would visit the one at Arcoris Plaza, Mont Kiara since it is closer to us. The ride home was a breeze and we went visiting at our aunt's house. And we got ourselves two ang pows each. Whoo hoo!!

  2. Yes, those things are quite hopeless. I've heard of people being led on a wild goose chase when their destination is just round the corner. I would rather check out the location on Google maps to see how I should go to get to a place. My! My! That sure was very un-Chinese, what you had for Chinese New Year. LOL!!!

  3. i'm also quite bad at navigating through unfamiliar parts of kl, and i've taken the wrong turn so many times that i now hate driving, heheh :D thank goodness for restaurants like ra.ft that stay open on chinese new year, hari raya, etc - the sausage, bacon and eggs on your plates look like a great way to celebrate :D

  5. What a nice brunch on CNY day 1. I prefer big breakfast to normal cny fare. Waiting for your visit to the mont Kiara branch because I have not been there.

  6. So glad you finally made it to Ra-Ft, the original branch (now you need to make it Eatomo next...haha!). And even more glad to hear that you loved everything on the plate. This remains one of my top favourite brunch cafes. ^o^ Couldn't agree more that their coffees are excellent (so glad that your brother loved the coffee too...and had a second). ^.^ I see both of you prefer sunny side up to scrambled eggs. If you ever decide not to have sunny side up, know that they do great scrambled eggs here, one of the better ones I've had.

Since you're planning to visit the Mont Kiara one if you do revisit, please have a slightly lower expectation so that you don't come off disappointed...hehehe! ;)

    1. It has been on my to-go list for a long time! Yes, Eatomo is definitely next hee..hee.. I can see why you enjoy Ra-ft Cafe (the Binjai branch) so much. Well, I am looking forwards to the Mont Kiara branch to try other items on the menu and will bear in mind your warning hah..hah...

    2. Oh, I forgot to comment about the tiramisu. I don't know if the one here is significantly different from other classic tiramisu (coz they seem to emphasise it on their menu as an Italian recipe). I actually loved this one bcoz it was extremely luscious and soft unlike most of the drier ones I've had before. I wonder if it could be due to the use of savoiardi (specifically Italian ladyfingers) that was extra light and airy or mascarpone (Italian cream cheese). I don't bake and don't know much about cakes to know the difference.

    3. OK, I believe the savoiardi was soaked a bit too long. I have made tiramisu before and learnt from my mistake. When you soak the savoiardi, just dunk it into the coffee syrup for one second and that's it. Don't linger or it will soak up too much liquid resulting in a tiramisu that's wet. Other than that, like you, I thought the tiramisu good as it was soft and creamy. Loved it.

  7. What a satisfying brunch for you on CNY Day one. Sometimes I had two cups of coffee in a day too as I am a coffee lover.

  8. I like the brunch and dessert that you and your brother had. When we first started to learn to use Waze, we kept making the wrong turn because we didn't know how to estimate the distance. Now we are better at following the instructions. I like the designs on the coffee, very artistic.
