Korean Honey Butter Chicken

Every time I hear of any place that sells Korean style fried chicken, I get very excited. But guess what? I have never been to any of these places to eat the fried chicken.

So far I have made Dakganjeong which I think is awesome. And now I am trying another flavor, Honey Butter. Honestly, I don't really like honey butter flavor but I thought it might be different with fried chicken.

The original recipe is for 2lbs of chicken which is approximately 1kg. That amount is too much for me, so I scaled it down to about 500g. It so happened that I had a packet of chicken pieces in the freezer which was just right for me.

Frying a small batch of chicken is a breeze because I could fry it all in one batch in my cast iron pan. I did the double frying method that makes the chicken extra crispy.

Verdict? Nope, I don't like the flavor. Not even with crispy fried chicken. But at least I had tried it. But if you are one of those people who love honey butter flavor, this might be the fried chicken for you.

So here's my scaled down recipe for a small batch of Korean Heoni-Beoto-Chikin. Enjoy!

Honey Butter Fried Chicken
Recipe source : Adapted from Maangchi

Ingredients :
- 500g chicken pieces
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp freshly cracked black pepper
- 1 egg
- 1/8 cup tapioca flour
- 1/8 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp baking powder

Honey Butter Sauce ingredients :
- 2 tbsp butter
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/8 cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp light soya sauce
- 2 tsp honey

Method :
1. In a mixing bowl, mix chicken with salt and pepper.
2. Add egg, tapioca flour, all purpose flour and baking powder.
3. Mix well to coat the chicken.
4. Heat up enough oil in a cast iron pan and when oil is hot, fry the chicken pieces until browned and crispy (you need to flip the chicken when the bottom side is browned)
4. Remove the chicken to a metal strainer.
5. Let the oil heat up again and fry the chicken one more time until chicken is well browned and crispy.
6. Remove to drain on the metal strainer.
7. Meanwhile, make the honey butter sauce.
8. In a wok, heat the butter and when melted, add the minced garlic. Fry until fragrant and slightly brown.
9. Add soya sauce and sugar and stir until sugar is melted. Then add honey and stir.
10. Let the mixture boil and add the fried chicken pieces. Toss to coat evenly with the sauce.
11. Serve hot.

  3. I don't know if I'd like this honey + butter flavour but I did like the honey flavoured Korean fried chicken I once had :) I know that I don't like too much butter flavour. Perhaps if you used honey with oil, that could be more to your liking? Is chicken your favourite meat since you cook quite a lot of it? ;) I'm always in awe how diligent you are at frying chicken...I always 'chicken out'....kekeke! ;D

  6. We have a Korean fried chicken franchise outlet here but we do not go there anymore - everything is coated with flour and deep fried, not gluten free. My girl used to love eating what they serve there.

    1. What a pity that your girl can't enjoy flour coated fried chicken. But there are alternative ways of coating which can be just as delicious.

  8. 'Korean Heoni-Beoto-Chikin' - is this a real word or you just made it? Whatever it is, it sounds good ^_^ The chicken looks good too.

But, I only like spicy chicken. That's it. Never try other flavoured chicken.

  14. Hi Phong Hong, I am used to spicy food. I think you are too. Perhaps this is the reason or maybe the aroma we are used too, isn't there. Doesn't matter at least you tried.
