Lockdown Day #21 : Sourdough

Today the two loaves of sourdough bread that I ordered from Bengbeng Sourdough arrived this morning. I took a leap of faith to make the order because the bakes that I purchased when they were at The Starling were not at their best.

I placed my order last Thursday and based on the email confirmation, my order arrived on Monday (today). Spot on!

The order arrived in a cardboard box.

Sent via GD Express all the way from Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

A handwritten note, how sweet!

My two loaves of sourdough goodies.

The Purple Sweet Potato Swirl & Walnut Sourdough and Chocolate Babka.

I eagerly opened the paper bag.

Inside was a heavy loaf wrapped in paper.

What a crusty beauty! I sliced the loaf using a serrated knife.

Oh! The purple swirls are so pretty! The bread is very fresh and moist. I am very happy.

You can smell the sweet potato and taste the walnuts. I sampled a slice and it was soft and chewy with a slight tang as sourdough should be. Can. Can. Can order again in future and try the other types of sourdough bread.

Then I opened up the Babka.

It was securely cling wrapped and I could immediately smell chocolate.

It was very crusty at the top and lots of crumbs dropped when I sliced the loaf.

This Chocolate Babka is also very fresh, chocolaty and buttery.

I sliced both loaves, placed the slices in plastic bags and placed them in a container for freezing. That's how I always keep my bread fresh.

Based on today's experience, I would order sourdough bread again from Bengbeng Sourdough.

I will place another order as soon as I finish what's in the freezer.

Maybe I should give it another try - Tuesday, tomorrow is sourdough day at a bakery here. Will grab one and blog about it. How much did you have to pay for yours?

    2. I changed my mind in the end, lazy so I did not go out to buy the sourdough here. Will have to wait till next week then - available only on Tuesdays.

  3. Wow! Wow! Very delicious looking bread. I sure would want to eat them. You are so kind hearted to give them another chance and order from them when they are so far away in Kota baru. I don't dare to buy from them so far away though your review of the bread is very good cos I am scared something will happen to the bread on the long journey. Enjoy your bread!

  4. Mak Oi! I really tabik you for ordering this Roti Massam all the way from Kota Bahru, Kelantan!! Next time, you might order Roti all the way from the Himalayan Mountains too. No distance is ever far for you when you really want the best food. Just like heroin fix.

I must say that your sliced breads are impressive and I had never seen such sourdough bread. My sister in Mont Kiara always baked them every week and sent over to me. I had to stuff them all alone until I looked like a sourdough roti. She was practicing her bakes and needed DBKLs to eat them. Now she has perfected them but I have waved white flags already.

    1. Not enough walnuts, unlike your home baked punya, plenty of nuts! LOL!

  9. Both the sourdough bread look beautiful and delicious and some more still so fresh all the way delivered from Kelantan. It is good that they use paper wrappings to wrap and deliver the bread. I can't remember whether I have tried sourdough bread before. If I buy, I will end up having to finish it all by myself.

    1. It is quite a lot, so I slice and freeze them to enjoy over several days.

  10. I was also surprised when you mentioned that the ones you got from The Starling weren't all that good as I know they've had received many praises for their sourdough bread. I guess sometimes it's best to market/sell your own products. Glad these ones you ordered direct from them turned out good. I too like sourdough but just the plain ones will do for me, lightly toasted with good butter and jam. ^_~

    1. I was quite impressed that the loaves arrived fresh. I will order the plain one later on and like you, I love it toasted with good butter and jam!
