A&W : A Hit of Nostalgia

It was a very rainy Thursday evening when felt like experiencing A&W after, what, more than 30 years. Wow.

Recently I have been reading about other people eating A&W burgers and coney dogs (and drinking the iconic root beer) and that triggered memories from long ago.

I have been to their PJ drive thru outlet (on one date with my partner and a few with err...what's-his-name. This is terrible) and back in the day, it was THE place to go.

It was a rather impulsive decision (I seldom Grabfood on weekdays) and I took a few stabs at my phone to get me a Beef Coney Combo which comes with a Chicken Coney Mashed Potato and a bottle of Root Beer (600ml). No, I did not get any extras like onion rings or fries because I did not want to overindulge.

Since the outlet closest to me is really, really close (TTDI), my order came quite fast in spite of the rain.

I excitedly opened the paper bag.

I wondered if I would enjoy the Coney Dog as much as I used to.

I requested extra fresh onion for my Coney Dog.

Oh Oh. Somebody is eyeing my Coney Dog

In fact I just fed her before the delivery arrived.

What? You wanna eat again? From experience, I know that if I let her sniff at my food, she would go away if the food is not appealing to her (this does not work with fried chicken).

After a few tentative sniffs, she decides that Coney Dog is not her thing.

What about me? The nice things first - the bun was fresh and soft and the hot dog had a nice bite (my brother shared that he got a tough dryish hot dog).

As for the meat sauce, it was just all right, not as delicious as I remembered all those donkey years ago. Maybe it's just my aging taste buds.

I don't remember ever having their mashed potatoes and I'm afraid I did not enjoy this one (my brother shares the same sentiment).

My cat also thinks the same.

Pity that I did not have any ice cream in the fridge or else I could have made me a root beer float (I used to love that). The root beer was nice, I made an exception to order it as I hardly drink this sort thing now.

All in all, it was an ok meal for me. I don't know if the recipe for the meat sauce has been tweaked or it is just a matter of my taste preference changing, I did not enjoy the Coney Dog as much and I had expected.

I hope others (old timers like me) and the younger generation find A&W appealing so that this brand can continue and succeed in its mission to be awesome again.

  1. I think the first time I had A & W was in 1971, so long ago in Singapore. Were you born yet? I was so excited because they had the same initials as me - AW! I had the chicken in the basket, don't think they have that in their menu now...and of course, their root beer!!!

  2. A 'dog' came to your house?...and that's why Ah Girl is on top of your sofa? Hee...hee..hee! ;) Of course this coney dog is not her thing...coz you didn't get the chicken coney! :O Like all fast food meals, an OK meal is good enough and what we should expect. If you were to compare their meat sauce with other meat sauces (like those in pastas), then no fight-lah but for a fast food, their meat sauce boleh-lah + they're also the only one who does this (anyway, I can't remember what it used to taste like all those years ago..lol). P/S: But better than any A&W meal is your cat thinking you're the awesome one instead! ;D

  3. yea, tht PJ outlet is so nostalgic. I prefer the A&W fried chicken, curly fries and root beer. Not much into coney dogs....but I'd think their coney dog doesn't taste as good as before (could be the sauce). I have never try their mashed potatoes, so I doubt I would order that in the future.

  6. I can't remember whether I have eaten the coney dog and mashed potatoes with coney sauce. I can only remember the root beer because I like the root beer float. Girl is very smart. She smells her food first before she eats them.
