Food at Training and Seminars

Every time when we attend training, my brother and I like to exchange information about the buffet. The food at such and such a place is good or the buffet at such and such a place is just like chap fan

Not too long ago I attended this one.

We have to keep abreast with accounting standards which seem to be changing so fast all the time. I miss the good old says when it was more fun to be an accountant.

But let's talk about the more interesting and relatable topic - food!

Most of the time, the cakes at these big hotels are not that great. I make better banana cake.

The selections at the buffet were just so so.

The only thing outstanding were the oysters!

Second round of oysters.

Desserts were just OK. I have to taste each one heh..heh...

On the second day of the seminar, the food was worse. And no oysters. Bah!

So I just snapped my desserts.

On the first day of the training, it rained cats and dogs in the evening.

I have not been to this part of town for ages!

When it rains, there is always traffic jam.

Oh, I remember Globe Silk Store!

It would be nice to take a walk on a good day for some look see look see.

So many cars!

Crawling .... crawling ....

I left the venue at 5:00 pm and reached home close to 8:00pm. So tired.

Next seminar.

Not that I enjoy this one but this is the accountant's equivalent (sort of) of Milan Fashion Week. If you are a fashion designer and you did not attend Milan Fashion Week, you are out.

Over eight hundred people attended.

I hate crowds. Tea break was chaotic.

There were some inconsiderate participants who went ahead and chit chatted among themselves.

Lunch? I think they got the trainees at Berjaya cooking school to whip up a feast. It was so bad I did not take any photos.

The only consolation was that desserts were not bad at all.

That's a lot of desserts because I hardly ate anything for the mains.

It was so nice that I went for a second helping.

And finally from my last training for the year. Not at a big hotel. Food prepared by a local caterer. Better tasting than the ones from the hotels.

This was tea break - kuay teow goreng (with some yum yum sambal), bingka labu (notice that I chose the burnt parts which are the best tasting) and karipap. So good!

And this was lunch - rice, ikan goreng (I took lots of sambal belacan), udang goreng kunyit, kari ayam, sayur campur and ulam. Sedap!

  1. Globe Silk Store!!! I love that place, bought lots of my clothes and those for my missus there! 1986, so long ago!!! The only reason why I would head over to Tunku Abdul Rahman when in KL at the time. Not into SOGO since the Japanese gave up on it...but there is a shop in Pertama that sells clothes my size...and the Coliseum!!!

I miss the good old days, attending courses, meetings, seminars, staying in nice hotels...and SIX meals a day!!! But by the 3rd day, I would sneak out to a coffee shop next door already for wanton mee and char siew fan.

    1. Oh yes, Globe Silk Store was my mum and my late grandma's favorite place to buy cloth back in those days. What? Six meals a day? We only get 4 hee..hee...

  2. Yup, had my fair share of hotel buffets during training seminars...all of which are not that good, average at best. And that's because the chefs (maybe even trainee chefs) taking care of the coffee house (usually of 3-star hotels as cost is a factor) are not great...jacks-of-all-cooking and master-of-none! >_< There they need quantity instead of quality to help with the ginormous amount of cooking they need to do. Usually the raw oysters and boiled prawns are what I go for too...but can't have too many oysters coz some not-so-fresh ones had given me stomach problems (and we certainly don't want that happening at a seminar...haha!). Desserts are something I won't touch so I can't believe you ate two plates of that in replacement of your main meal. P/S: That street (haven't been there for years) is notorious for crazy traffic.

    1. After having had buffet at hotels, the notion that the food is at such places are very good sort of shattered hah..hah... In fact when MIA holds seminars at non-hotel venues, the catered food was a lot better.

  5. The food should be nice to attract people to these seminars but it is mandatory for accountants so that is why they did not pay that much attention to the food it seems. Wah, so jam. Since you do not drive, did you grab there and back?

  6. I don't have much experience attending seminars but I know the food provided is definitely not at stellar level, LOL
I'll happily choose to have dessert only too if the mains served not to my liking.

  8. I had food poisoning the first time I had raw oysters. After that I avoid raw oysters. When serving local food, local caterers win. Most hotels serves tasty desserts. Globe Silk Store was our favourite place when I was working in KL many, many years ago.
