Cincai Char Also Nice

There was once when my late grandma was taken to dine at a newly opened restaurant in Kuala Terengganu. The food apparently was not to grandma's standards.

So she remarked to my mum that " ti choo nan lamchoo lar pun ho chiak" loosely translated as "at home, we simply stir and yet the food comes out tasty".

Well, I'll have to agree with grandma whenever I go to places that don't get it right. What were they thinking? Just a few days ago before the new year, this place that I wrote about previously suffered this fate :

So back to the kitchen. Where I found some French beans and had them stir fried with lap cheong and eggs. This one is grandma approved I am sure.

Then the other day I found a container of rice in the freezer. It's from last year wahahaha... so I took it out and simply kacau in my non-stick pan after I pan fried a marinated pork collar.

And of course not forgetting simply roasting stuff in your own oven. Grandma never used an oven and therefore was never acquainted with roasted broccoli. But I doubt if she would like it because grandma was a bit subversive, she did not like veggies. Hah!

I miss my grandma and her very cute quips.

  1. I'm getting ready for bed and shouldn't have read your post. Suddenly I'm very hungry!! Loved hearing about your grandma---she might have changed her mind about veggies had she tried your roasted versions :)

  8. Your grandma sounds like an auntie of mine. Always compared restaurant food with her home cooked dishes. Always home cooked ones are the best.

  9. your late grandma sounds as frank-spoken as mine - but i'm sure she was right too - with all those decades of experience, cooking for the family with love, those traditional matriarchs could all show these young restaurant chefs a thing or two! :) a bit sad to see what happened to sedapnya (especially since i never even managed to visit them), but hopefully they'll be replaced by a restaurant that would meet every grandmother's expectations! :)

    1. Well, our grandmother's could teach the present generation of wanna be chefs a thing or two and more! Don't worry, you did not miss much with the restaurant closure. I am hoping a healthy food restaurant ala Goodness Greens will take that space!

I've watched a TV series which is a competition reality show of people who really can't cook and the mess they had created in the show really make you think: What the hXXX are those people can't do even the simplest cooking skill!
