Sopoong : A Revisit

One day (some weeks ago) I planned to go to Annie 1 for the Curry Chicken Rice Set. But guess what? It rained cats and dogs while I was inside The Starling. So I had to eat at the mall. That's when I remembered Mun's post of her makan outing with her friends at Sopoong@MyTown.

So I decided to revisit Sopoong@The Starling. My first visit was about a year ago. Somehow I never went back.

After going through the menu, I chose the Dakgalbi. It was described as "chicken pieces marinated in gochujang (red pepper paste) sauce and stir fried with vegetables and tteok (rice cakes)". That sounded good to me.

For drinks, I had the Yujacha (Korean Citron Tea). I was served the drink and this burner thingy came along.

Yikes! Whatever was that thing for?

Well apparently, the Dakgalbi is placed on the burner to keep it hot. The server failed in his attempt to light the thing and I took the opportunity to tell him that I did not want the fire. So he placed the Dakgalbi on the burner anyway sans fire.

The Dakgalbi was already served very hot in this iron pan and I really felt that it was not necessary to have it heated. I am one of those people who do not appreciate food that is piping hot. I like my food warm or else I find it difficult to eat.

I gave the Dakgalbi a good stir to cook the mushrooms. There were lots of vegetables inside and not much chicken. The rice cakes were a tad too chewy.

My meal came with three banchan which we all right. Overall, I found the Dakgalbi quite tasty and the portion was quite big. Small eaters would need to share. What I like is that the rice was served in a very small portion.

On another day, I came back for the Bulgogi which is "marinated beef with soy sauce stir fried with vegetables and glass noodles".

Again, I requested for no fire. The food was already hot enough for me.

They were very generous with the glass noodles. There is not much beef, I'm afraid but lots of vegetables.

The banchan was pretty much the same as before.

This time the rice was overcooked and soggy. Ugh!

I won't mind coming back again as I find the food affordable and acceptable. Not top notch Korean fare but can do for those days when I am craving for some K-food.

  1. Too soggy rice is a no no no. Thanks for sharing about these two dishes so now I know what to expect for them. Do you like kimchi? Cos I saw my friend eating kimchi jigae and it looks good but I suspect the meat will be little and there will be more vegetables. I like more vegetables and I will certainly need to keep half my food.

    1. I am just ok with kimchi, not crazy over it. Next time, I ought to keep half of the food as it made me feel very full finishing everything.

  2. How come he failed to light the fire. People use that to start barbecue fires these days, so easy. I'm so not into Korean, very expensive here too!

    1. I don't know. He used that gun-like thingy and it just refused to ignite, which was just as well.

The rice for your second meal there looked so mushy and wet =.="

    1. I would prefer it without the capsicum actually. I feel it does not go with the dish.
