It was my brother's birthday last month and he wanted dinner at Morganfield's. The last time we were there was back in 2014 at The Curve.
This time we headed out to the outlet at 1 Utama which is more convenient for us.
We took a while to decide on our order and we picked the Jack Daniel's Glazed Baby Back ribs for sharing. We remembered the humongous spare ribs we had and since we were not super hungry, the baby back ribs would do.
We also got ourselves a starter - The Fourplay to share. For drinks, my brother went with the Sour Apple Mojito while I chose the Berry Easy.
My brother's Sour Apple Mojito came first. Let me turn his glass around and show what's inside.
I see lots of mints leaves, some apple chunks and sour plum (asam boi) in some sort of fizzy drink. I had a sip and yes, it was very refreshing.
My Berry Easy was very nice too since I love berries.
Now, this is the Jack Daniel's Glazed Baby Back ribs. My brother's first remark was "Not so perfect" and he was referring to the condition of the ribs. Let me show you.
Yes, it looked like that (we hadn't touched it yet), not in one perfect whole piece. I think you can see from the photo that it was not good.
I found the meat dry and stringy and there was not enough glaze on the ribs. It felt like this piece was prepared way earlier and reheated, hence the poor condition. I was so disappointed.
Luckily redemption came in the form of the amazing Fourplay.
Spicy Chicken Wings....
......Beer Battered Onion Rings.........
........Russet Potato Boats (my favorite!) and....
.... Crab and Spinach Dip. Let my brother show you how yummy and creamy it was.
It was a struggle to eat the dry meat from the ribs and I gave up.
Then we ordered a dessert to share. Only one choice was available because there will be a change of menu in April.
This was our Crispy Waffle served with chocolate ice cream, chocolate sauce and marshmallows.
As we were enjoying the ice cream, this very nice chap who appeared to be the supervisor or manager (he was the one who took our orders) came to find out how was the meal. So I simply had to tell him the truth about the ribs.
He asked if he could replace it for us, but we were already done. Then he told me in future, to inform the service staff if anything was not in order and they would replace the ribs.
Well, I guess I should have spoken up earlier but I just didn't want to make a fuss. Besides, I have heard horror stories of what they do when you send back food.

Later we were informed that dessert was on the house. Well, that was very nice though I saw it more fitting for the ribs to be waived.
Though the ribs were a major fail at a rib house (I'd like to think this was a one off incident, we were unlucky) the dinner was not totally lost as we enjoyed the starters, the drinks and the ice cream (though the waffles could have been better).
We would visit again and hopefully when we do, the ribs deliver.
Good that you choose to see the glass as half full instead of half empty. Having a positive outlook on life is the way to go as life is so unpredictable. You are so kind to be willing to give them a second chance since you wrote that you would visit again. I on the other hand am thinking should I try the ribs here at all or not.
ReplyDeleteYou could try the ribs. If the one served is not up to mark, tell the server. I am sure they will replace if we tell them nicely.
DeleteWe used to love The Swine's until Morgan came to town years ago. Honestly I enjoyed the ribs platter and Fourplay very much. We never had no problem with their ribs as the whole tray was moist and drenched with enough sauces to make us lick our 10 fingers like greedy gluttons. Next time, bring me along since it is just walking distance for me!! Haiks! Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! Boh Sui Lah Ah Hong Chee...
ReplyDeleteI told my wife that in future we should just order their Fourplay as a meal. So yums!
#BojioMe! #HongCheeBohSuiLah #AhHongMakanBabi
What do you mean Ah Hong Chee boh sui? hahhahaha... I've been to Swine and liked it. Yup, the Foruplay is big enough as a meal. Then can have dessert later.
DeleteI love the name, Fourplay. Notty, notty! If it were my birthday, I would not mind coming here too! Heard a lot about the place. Awwwwww!!! The ribs weren't good? Maybe I'd stick to Tony's then.
ReplyDeleteThe ones we had at their other outlet were good.
DeleteMorganfield's is a very old name, they serve rather similar food like Chicago Ribs (I remember liking a similar appetiser platter). They started out well too and then the ribs became stringy like the one you had (and I stopped going altogether)...and the next thing I know, they closed! >_< If you had voiced your concern earlier on, they could have replaced your ribs but since you finished (or almost) finished the ribs, the next best thing they could do was to provide the dessert on the house. They're lucky to have you as a customer who would return even though the meal was underwhelming. If it was me, well...you know what I'd do. ^_*
ReplyDeleteFor an established place like this, I would expect them to maintain higher standards. Well, it all depends on the people who run it. I would give them one more chance but if the ribs are still no good on second visit, then it's curtains! LOL!
DeleteWishing your brother a Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteHappy Belated Birthday to your brother...
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThe mojito looked so good. I don't mind more mints in it.
ReplyDeleteA lovely birthday treat for your brother. More like a big feast. I love russet potatoes.
Next time I want the Mojito hee..hee...
Deleteah, pork ribs!! I like!! but yea, agreed tht yours seems like not-so-perfect, coz it doesn't look appealing to me. Great customer service though, thumbs up!
ReplyDeleteHope next visit will be better.
DeleteThe Fourplay looks good! Hope your next visit will have a perfect rib served!
ReplyDeleteI hope so too!
DeleteWould love to tuck in too, dear! Happy belated birthday to your bro! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThank you, Shirley!
DeleteI love both your drinks and would love to try them. I agree that the ribs do not look good, lucky that the fourplay make up for it, i like the fourplay too and that ice cream waffle, i thought i saw morganfield signage somwhere in jb that day.
ReplyDeleteBoth drinks were very nice. Ah, then when you next visit JB you can try it. Or is there one in Singapore?
DeleteHappy Belated Birthday to your brother, Phong Hong! I would certainly click glasses with him with the refreshing sour apple Mojito! I would just go for the spicy chicken wings, and the yummy beer battered onion rings, and as for the baby back ribs...you gotta leave that to us here in the U.S. as a total 'winner'...but for all the other Asian yummy foods, I would travel for miles!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Elisabeth! You are right, you guys have THE BEST BBQ! I hope to make it back to the US again and eat me some BBQ ribs :)
DeleteI till remember the raves for their pork ribs during their opening and I myself had tried a few times and satisfied with the food. So sad to see their standard has dropped :(
ReplyDeleteI am hoping it was just a one off incident.
