Happy Birthday!

It was my brother's birthday and we had a mini bash at Nam Heong@The Starling. I was here with my auntie previously and this time, I was definitely in a more relaxed mood.

The i-pad is fixed to the corner of the table.
I noted that with an i-pad (which is fixed to the table), there is a disadvantage because it's quite hard for two people (or more) to view the menu. Somehow, I still like the old fashioned menu, where you can get a bird's eye view on all the selections available.

So. We did take a while to decide.

This is my brother's Signature Dry Asam Curry Noodles. I tasted a bit of the broth and it was spicy sourish. Not to my liking but my brother liked it.

I am a sucker for chicken rice, so I picked the Signature Chicken Rice with Steamed Chicken

Notice the very conservative portion of chicken. It was the bony part at that.

The rice I'm afraid was very starchy and stodgy. I could not eat it and left the rest of the rice untouched.

We got ourselves some Nam Heong Egg Tarts and Signature Chicken Sou.

The Signature Chicken Sou was very good. Nice flaky and crispy pastry with a tasty chicken filling.

We could not resist the Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun with Minced Meat and Mushrooms. Unfortunately, it was quite flat in terms of taste. I did not enjoy this.

The Crispy Century Egg Roll was not too bad.

It was served with a lime flavored mayo which I did not like.

My drink. Cucumber and Sour Plum Juice. I could not taste the sour plum and it was all cucumber to me. Not pleasant and I will not order this again.

Instead of a drink, my brother preferred to have this Ipoh ABC which he kindly shared with me.

It was very nice indeed! What we liked was that it was not overly sweet. It was just nice and made for a refreshing close to our meal.

Oh whatever happened to the egg tarts?

They came home with me hee..hee..hee... And yes, they were excellent!

    1. I think when hawker staples are commercialized like that, it loses its original taste and charm.

  3. ooo ... since the chicken rice is a signature dish, i'd definitely have high expectations! now i'm dreaming of a plate of rich, aromatic rice, with smooth, tender, fleshy chicken ... and a side helping of chicken liver! :D

The portion of the chicken looks miserable, if me to eat, not enough...

  5. I don't mind that bony part of the chicken (I think that's the "kai yee toh" which is my favourite). It's the part that's just above the thigh but the rice has failed...big time (and that's their signature dish?)....looks so mushy! :( I can understand why you can't finish the rice, I hate overly soft and mushy rice too.

  6. Happy birthday to your brother, my birthday coming soon too, hint hint hahaha

The chicken doesn't look delicious and the rice is plain white rice? Not the authentic chicken rice?

  9. Oh PH! Next time if you have time,do drop by in Ipoh for the better version of Nam Heong or any kind of food in Ipoh... That chicken rice you shown is really pathetic, so bony, as you said.. but the CCF looks appetizing..

The signature dish should be something that we will remember forever and order every time we come to the same restaurant (^_^) but unfortunately, it failed your expectations huh?

  13. Whether Nam Heong at Ipoh got the same menu. I rarely will go there unless if I bring my parents to Ipoh, I will bring them go because they like their coffee. Food wise, it was just so so to me too.
