Meat For Them, Soup For Me

So yesterday before I went home, I went to Jaya Grocer to buy a big ass chicken.

It was the cheapest chicken in the supermarket. This brand.

When I got home, I washed the chicken and cut it into quarters. And then it went into the slow cooker.

This chicken comes with feet, liver, gizzard and head. Don't ask me what I did with the chicken head.

I added about 1.2L of water, just enough to cover the chicken.

Then I set the slow cooker to low and leave it to slowly cook overnight.

This morning, it was just barely simmering.

I remove the chicken meat to a bowl to cool. Once cool enough to handle, I remove the bones and the meat goes into a container for storage in the fridge.

And then I strain the broth. It looked very murky.

But after straining and sitting (the sediments sink to the bottom) in my measuring cup, it became much clearer.

This is the good stuff.

The broth that drips off the meat is the best part. The taste is very rich and intense.

This is the result.

Meat for the kitties. This (with chicken livers added) is enough for 3 1/2 days meal.

Tasty chicken broth for me.

Too bad I don't have a doggie. It would have enjoyed these bones.

I do this twice a week and it may seem troublesome but I find that it is worth the effort. Good nutrition for my cats (and cleaner/less smelly litter boxes) and delicious chicken broth for me.

***Kittie Updates***

Kittie Kat's fur has grown back covering her operation scar. Can you see who is hiding behind the flower pot?

There she is. Mama cat's mini me.

Auww.... isn't that sweet! A hug from mama.

  1. Thanks for the tutorial and for sharing about this brand of chicken. You didn't mention what happened to the cooked gizzards?

    1. Ah, I just boil the gizzard together with the liver. I usually boil a batch of chicken livers on the same day.

    2. So the gizzards get mixed into the livers and the gizzards get eaten by your babies ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ˜บ too, right? Good ๐Ÿ‘

    3. Yes. I have bought gizzards to cook for them but they don't like gizzard as much as liver.

    1. They were being playful with each other and that was so sweet to observe.

  3. So, based on what you said, you need 2 chickens a week = RM50 x 4 = RM200 a month. Is that cheaper than buying cat food for a month? If it is, then certainly worth doing...for better well-being of the cats (regular chicken is good enough for the cats). One day, when you're at the wet market, do try getting a choi yin kai for your soup (or just the carcass is also good enough). You'll see that the colour and taste of the broth is very different. Ya, the broth that drips off the chicken is the best. I've seen my MIL (make for my FIL when he was sick) put a whole choi yin kai and let the juices drip off it...the juices was so intense in flavour you can smell it.

Haha, I don't think that's a hug. As Kittie Kat herself is still rather young, I think she's still playful (like a kid herself)...and it's playing with her offspring. I've seen that in young kitty mamas...lol.

    1. Oh yes, much cheaper than feeding them with cheapest processed wet foods (ProDiet for me) which cost me double what I spend cooking chicken and livers for them. Oh yes, I do want to experience choi yin kai broth.

Ya, ya, it was a playful session for them which resulted in a hug-like moment which I thought was cute and sweet. You are right, Kittie Kat hasn't grown up yet hah...hah...

  4. Thanks for sharing the process. I have not eaten innards and animal parts for a few years. I know livers are good souce of iron. And they taste delicious to me. I do cook sometimes when I want to enjoy a little "me-time" at home. Simple dishes though but my mom is definitely the better cook hee hee. I learned by studying recipes and observing. Cooking by myself is definitely more hygienic and healthy because we can choose the way we handle the food and choose the type of ingredients we like. If you observe how they handle food outside, I guess we won't dare to eat them.

Cats and dogs cannot get along right? If you have a doggie, you can take him or her for a walk lol !! You don't do that with cats right? Woof woof !! Your furkids are really lucky and good life to run into an owner like you.

    1. I am sure you are quite a good cook by now! Cats don't need to be taken for walks, they know how to go jalan-jalan by themselves LOL! I love my furkids <3

  5. Yes, better meal for them. So you directly drink the soup or use it for other cooking??

  6. Thank you for the detailed step-by-step recipe, but I don't know what to do with the chicken after boiled it because it most probably doesn't tasted good with coarse texture. >_<
