Apam Balik Man, Where Are You?

Now when was this? It must be way before the MCO judging from the photos of the apam balik man without a mask. Yup, I have a lot of back log posts.

This stall used to operate outside Restoran One One One (Bee Fat) which is just a few doors from Standard Chartered Bank. Prior to MCO 2.0, I did not see this stall when I passed by the area.

Don't you miss the days when you can actually see people's faces in public?

This is the menu. As you can see, there are sweet and savory apam balik.

If I remember correctly I had the Peanut + Banana.

This apam balik is the thin and crispy type, not the thick one which I prefer.

I ate it there and then while it was still warm. Not bad at all. But I never went back because as I mentioned, I prefer the thick type.

Then I went for a walk (oh how I miss my after lunch walks) and that's when I saw this notice.

Ah! This is in 2019 because I remember Pho Real opened around January 2020 and then in March, boom! MCO 1.0 happened.

It was also during this walk that I came across Rebel Pasta.

I told myself that I must visit but I have not done so up to now. Reason? The menu was too rebellious for me.

I found some old photos of Girl.

She is terrified of the vacuum cleaner due to the loud noise. So she goes and hides anywhere from the "monster".

These days she simply dashes upstairs. Belle Belle does not seem to be affected by the vacuum cleaner. She just stays cool. It makes me wonder if Belle Belle's hearing is compromised or she is simply not such a scaredy cat.

Even after I turned off the vacuum cleaner, Girl refused to come inside. I was trying to entice her with the cat toy. Those were the good old pre-pandemic days.

  1. If you miss Apam Balik, you can get them in my territory. Just go to your KGB burger area and you can find 2 different Apam Balik stalls selling along both streets parallel to KGB.

  2. I like the crispy type but I dont mind the thicker apam balik. As long as they are generous with the filling, anything is good.

I do miss looking at people's facial expression. Now that was in the past but hope we will get to see people's face soon in future.

  3. We have an apam balik man in my neighbourhood, next lane to where I am staying, among the shops that I frequent. Opens in the afternoon only, around 3 - so famous that if you go to Google Maps, it is indicated there right in the middle of the parking lot - PANCAKE STALL. I don't mind if he wears a mask though - he is not handsome, not like YOUR pancake man. LOL!!!

    P.S.
Gosh!!! Ours is only 70 sen a piece and I thought that's mighty expensive.

  4. I also prefer the thick apam balik which has more taste. The thin one is just crispy, no taste. Hah...hah..Girl looks a lot thinner in the old photos. Cookie is also afraid of the vacuum cleaner but has gotten better over time. You can't entice a cat with toys, you entice them with food lah...lol! :D

    1. hah..hah.. she liked to chase that toy so I thought it would work. When I want her out of the house (when I do housekeeping), I will just open the door and turn on the vacuum cleaner and off she goes. LOL!

  5. The apam van around my area sells both thick and thin versions of apam. I prefer the thick ones too as I like doughy food. No, I don't miss seeing people's full face. I prefer them to wear masks. Girl is so adorable! Do post more of her photos.

  6. ah Girl was slimmer back then....and sort of 'cooperative' to post for the camera...LOL! i prefer the crispy thin apam coz the doughy ones make me full/bloated. I don't miss seeing people with full face. I prefer the public to wear mask, coz wearing mask is more hygienic (even without the pandemic) especially for those hawkers/sellers preparing food. I also notices people nowadays smoke less in public when enforce rule to wear mask.

    1. Yes, she was much thinner back then and I fattened her up. LOL! I am so used to wearing mask and I might still wear it even when the pandemic is over hah..hah..

  7. I like both the thick and thin apam balik. The thick one is very filling, love it with lots of peanut filling. The thin ones are not so filling so can easily eat 2 pieces. Lol! I especially like the one with added fresh coconut grating as filling. Cute photos of Girl hiding from the vacuum cleaner and also in the last photo.

  8. Oh, I though this man so daring to sell apam balik without mask! hahahaa.... Yes, gone are the good old days... in my sixty years of living, this is the first pandemic I am facing and life is not the same anymore since last year. As you said, going out without a mask has the feel of being half naked now... hahaha... I don't really mind wearing masks, I just hope that the pandemic will not be so serious as it is now...

    1. This is something we never imagined would happen, just only in the movies! I am so used to wearing mask now and possibly will continue to do so even after the pandemic hah..hah...

  9. I like both thick and thin Apom Balik, the distinctive flavour of the base for the former and the crispiness for the later. But I don't think I tried other variations other than the basic peanut + jagung flavour.
