Breakfast Lunch And Such@Penang

It was day 2 of my stay in Penang and we went to Pulau Tikus market to look for something that I wanted to eat for a long time.

Pan chien kueh! I remember this kueh that my mum used to buy from the Damansara Utama pasar malam when I was in secondary school.

I can't wait!

Then we walked to the market in search of kuey teow thng.

Along the way I saw lots of stalls selling all sorts of things.

Finally.

While waiting, I had my long awaited pan chien kueh. I like this version - thick and chewy. The ones I have had over in PJ are those thin crispy ones which I don't like.

My partner got us the kuey teow thng with duck meat.

I sipped the soup and it was good.

The fish balls were springy and the kuey teow slippery smooth. So good!

Later in the day, we went in search of something to pacify our stomachs. We did not want to eat too heavy because of the dinner that evening.

Mee goreng mamak!

I've never had this before. This was my partner's and I taxed just a bit heh..heh..

Nice! Nice! Regretted not getting one for myself. What I loved the most were the potatoes, of all things wahahaha!!

Washed down with gandum (Penang people call this kantung, you know it as mak chuk).

I was still full from breakfast because I have stopped eating breakfast since starting intermittent fasting. Well, when you are in Penang you must be mad to fast!

And yes, I did get to eat char koay teow and asam laksa and cendol the next day.

  1. Yes, that is very true - must be mad to fast if in Penang. I also eat non-stop whenever I visit Penang. Normally the stalls that sell thin crispy pancakes will also sell thick ones too. I wonder why the ones in PJ that you mentioned only sell thin ones, so weird. Hmmm, wondering which pg char kway teow stall you tried since there are so many good ones in pg.

    1. I haven't been around much in PJ, hence I missed out on so many things. There is a van near my office that sells this pan chien kueh but it is the thin crsipy type. They don't do the thick ones. My CKT post will be coming out and you will be disappointed hah..hah...

  5. Oooooo...I love Penang kway teow th'ng!!!

The ban chian koi, I like the thin crispy ones, not these thick ones. Can get both at a stall round the corner from my house - it is even on Google Maps - "Pancake Shop". LOL!!!

What??? You never had mee mamak? Where have you been? To the moon and back?

  6. I try not to eat sugar but I can't resist ban chang kuih. Yes, for ban chang kuih, it has to be the thick ones...the thin ones tak sedap! ;) You can't find ban chang kuih in PJ coz you hardly venture out to coffee shops, wet markets and pasar malams (I'm sure you'll find some good ones in these places). Luckily, I can satisfy my cravings for these at the wet market I go to (in my adjacent neighbourhood) and my neighbourhood's pasar malam. Am surprised to find out that you've never eaten mamak mee goreng before. But then again, I guess you hardly go to mamak shops either. Not all will have potatoes, what I love is the tauhu goreng :) Glad you got to eat some of your favourite things...but you can find them in your area too (you just have to look for them).
