What's With Bubble Tea? You Like?

One afternoon I went for a walk in hopes of burning off some food that I ate hah...hah....That's when I noticed new or soon to be opened bubble tea places.

Do you like bubble tea?

I don't. Tried it once and that's it.

I don't understand what's the hype.

This one has an unusual name. Bawangchaji

Then there's the one at the mall, basement level. When Tiger Sugar first opened, goodness. There was a long queue. For weeks.

And then there's another one upstairs.

This lot used to be occupied by a dessert place called Homuri. Then it was replaced by another occupant which had no name. And now, Lerz.

I wonder how long this hype will last.

And then there are those fancy tea shops.

Selling tea with fancy flavors.

Matcha Cheese Milk Foam? Oh my God!

This one appears to be selling bubble tea and souffle.

I wish them well and good luck!

  1. I remember you liking the tapioca pearls but not the milk tea. I've never tried one (I choose not to) but I know I won't like...especially most HK milk tea...and the sweetness now that I read a recent article in the Star papers that a cup of bubble tea can contain 20 teaspoons of sugar...gasp! >.< Yeah, I wish them good luck too. It was once a hot item and then quickly disappeared from the scene (after a few years) and now it's making a comeback. Let's see how long this streak lasts this time.

    1. Guess what, the bubble tea place upstairs at Starling (Lerz) closed for "renovation". Usually the word renovation means bye-bye.

  2. I also chose not to try any now. It seems that the magic is in the fresh milk, tapioca pearls and brown sugar combination of taste. Since I am not drinking fresh milk anymore and I don't care much for tapioca pearls, I chose not to drink any. But back in 1996, when "青蛙下蛋 Qīng Wā Xià Dàn" (Frog Egg Drink) is one of the most famous and popular drinks in Taiwan (main ingredients are sugar water and tapioca pearls), I have tried the drink and find that I don't care much for the tapioca pearls (bobba) so that's that. However if there are tapioca pearls in any shaved ice dessert that I happen to order then I will eat them and share with my friends. Let us see whether all these bobba drinks shops will still be around end of next year.

    1. I am also observing if the business can sustain. With so many players around, it would be quite tough.

  3. It's fun & an indulgence to drink it once in a while but I myself haven't joined the madness of queuing up at every single boba outlet during its opening day. 😝

    1. Good for you! This thing is not good for health and not good for our pocket.

  4. I like everything with brown sugar, so I like this Boba milk drink but..... I restrict myself to drink too much coz I know they are really fattening >_<. So far I've tried 3 or 4 times only, each time we only bought 1 cup then shared among 3 of us, not so bad lah hor LOL

  7. No, thank you, not a fan of such drinks - don't see what is so nice... and especially after reading all the horror stories about the bubbles and the extremely high sugar content, it is a BIG NO, thank you!

  8. I normally don't drink bubble tea in Malaysia but I did try drinking some in Taiwan. I like it but not a big fan, unlike my sons, they simply love them!

  13. Have to admit that I'm not a bubble tea fan - partly for health reasons and partly because I've never seen it sold in a reusable cup. It always seems to be single-use packaging.

    1. Ah, I see that you take environmental issues into consideration! That's really good. I am starting to be more conscious and try to avoid plastics and single use packaging where possible.
