Dahmakan Made Me Lazy : Part 2

Continuing on from my Dahmakan experience from Part 1, I have had many more meals cooked and delivered to me hee...hee...

Meal #6

What's in the box (RM14.90, I paid RM9.90) :

This is probably the (saddest looking) most disappointing meal so far. I expected to see onions, (more) capsicum and pineapple but it came just like that - chicken with just two small pieces of capsicum. The meat was hard (chicken breast) and the only nice thing is that the sauce was acceptable and the amount was adequate to go with the rice.

Would I order this again ? : No.

Meal #7

What's in the box (RM33.00, I paid RM19.90) :

This has to be my favorite of the lot. The rice is akin to biryani rice and the flavors and aroma were kapow! kapow! kapow

It came with a container of runny yogurt sauce, and I was a bit fearful of it because I dislike plain yogurt. But I tried a bit and hey, it was pretty good.

The thinly sliced lamb could have been a bit more tender but I really cannot complain. I was quite impressed with this meal. However, I feel that roasted broccoli is not suitable. Instead it would be better served with acar or curried vegetables.

Would I order this again ? : You bet I would!

Meal #8

What's in the box (RM26.90, I paid RM19.90) :

I have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, the beef brisket was tender enough but it was a bit gamey, quite strong beefy smell.

The seasoning tasted a bit odd to me and I poured the runny teriyaki sauce over the beef. It improved the taste some, though I was not 100% with that flavor.

The pickled vegetables were a little bland, possibly not pickled long enough for the pickling liquids to be absorbed.

I added sliced cucumbers which I brought from home for some freshness and to add on to my vegetable quota.

Would I order this again? : Maybe not.

Meal #9

I ordered this Black Pepper Roast Chicken Breast (for the BBQ beans) late in the day and I noted that certain meals run out pretty fast and the app let's you know when stocks run low.

What's in the box (RM29.00, I paid RM19.90) :

This is a very saucy meal. I loved the BBQ beans and the gravy, loads of flavors and it was spicy hot. There is also half a hard boiled egg in there that seemed out of place to me.

Of course I was not fond of the chicken but I was happy with everything else, though I found the portion of beans to be too little.

Would I order this again ? : No, because I don't like chicken breast.

Meal #10

What's in the box (RM29.00, I paid RM19.90) :

I would have liked it to be baked a little bit more for more browning and flavor.

Quite generous layer of chicken but I don't seem to see any vegetables. There's a lot of cheese there, all creamy and melty. It was a little lacking in seasoning and since I had this at home, I added a few twists of black pepper.

And lashings of chili sauce hee..hee...hee... This was a very filling meal and it arrived late when I was super hungry.

Would I order this again ? : Yes, but not so soon and not so often, only when a lasagne craving hits me. You know what? Beef lasagne would be super!

Meal #11

What's in the box (RM35.00, I paid RM19.90) :

This was very aromatic meal and I was quite impressed by the portion of salmon that I got. Although I liked the spice paste, I thought my salmon was on the dry side. I squeezed the wedge of lemon and I liked how the lemon juice perked up the already aromatic tandoori spice paste.

My first experience with tandoori was tandoori chicken at a restaurant and I found the meat a little dry. From then on I was not a fan of tandoori.

I liked everything else - the aromatic rice (but did not appreciate those pumpkin seeds), the pickled onions and the cooked-just-right cauliflower (it was tender and yet crunchy). Even the mint mayo was quite pleasant.  Overall, this made for a very filling meal. If only the salmon was moist.

Would I order this again : Yes, I think so since I love aromatic Indian food.

Meal #12

What's in the box (RM24.90, I paid RM19.90) :

I know it does not look pretty but don't let the unappetizing looks turn you away. This Masala Butter Chicken is vavavoom!!! So flavorsome! So delicious! My only complaint is the slices of carrots were very hard. Does not go with this meal at all. What would be nice is chutney or some pickled onions or acar.

Would I order this again : YES!!!!

Meal #13

What's in the box (RM14.90, I paid RM9.90) :

This was a surprise because I did not expect it to taste that good (based on my experience with meal #6). But boy, was I pleased when I took a bite of the chicken and found it to be tender and moist. The sauce had great flavors going for it and it was spicy hot. Good portion of chicken and the amount of rice was just nice.

Would I order this again : YES!

Meal #14

What's in the box (RM24.90, I paid RM19.90) :

I was most excited about this meal but upon tasting the chicken, I was very disappointed. There was nothing remotely resembling Korean flavors (to me) except for the kimchi

The seasoning on the chicken was just flat and spicy hot. That's it. But I give credit for the portion size and the chicken was moist and tender.

Would I order this again : No.

Now for the last one (for this post I mean, I am ordering some more hah..hah...)

Meal #15

What's in the box (RM14.90, I paid RM9.90) :

This was also a surprise because I did not expect to like it all that much but hey!

I thought it was pretty good. It's a very small portion though. I probably can down 2 portions to feel more satisfied. Since I was eating at the office, I can't transfer this to a plate.

So I transferred the spaghetti (which was cooked just right) into the sauce box (which was obviously too small). A little clumsy but I managed and I thought it needed a bit more sauce.

Would I order this again : Yes!

Well, seeing that I am enjoying the meals (some more than others and some not at all) there may well be a part 3!

  1. All look good to me...but not the prices. If they are all so expensive, I'd much sooner cook my own at home. After all, I've nothing else better to do, old retiree! :D

  4. I see you're truly enjoying your dahmakan experience...you've eaten more meals than me (meal #18 and counting)! O_o So far, you've tried all different meals from me except for three...braised beef brisket, tandoori salmon & spaghetti bolognese...and looks like you liked all three. Like you, I'm not a big fan of tandoori as I agree with you that the chicken is rather dry. I think it's this way coz they need to cook the spice through that's marinating the chicken (or fish), so it's left to bake in the tandoori oven for much longer. Salmon cooks a bit faster so it's not as dry as chicken I find.

For me, I felt that their fish dishes (I know you don't like fish much) were most successful (followed by beef) over any chicken dish. I think they're better with local dishes that are spiced-based. As for the vegetables component, though we think some of the dishes could be better paired with other vegetables, we won't get our wish as they like to use generic vegetables that can go with all their dishes..that's why it's almost always carrot & broccoli! >_<

P/S: I'm wondering why didn't you pour the sauce over the spaghetti instead of the other way round! *scratch head* Going forward, I think you'll enjoy a comfort dish of minced chicken & tofu, beef rendang or choose some fish dishes that are assam-based (like the two I had). I'm sure you'll be exploring even more dishes in the days ahead and I'll be waiting to see which ones I should avoid...hee..hee! ;)

    1. It's been quite good so far but two days ago the beef brisket I ordered was very tough and I had a lot of chewing to do! Yup, I complained but other than that the flavors were still marvelous.

Yah, I am not much of a fish fan as I prefer chicken and beef. My main gripe, like you, is the vegetables. Not enough and not the right kind hah..hah...

OK, it seems illogical to put the spaghetti into the sauce instead of vice versa because if I poured the sauce into the main box, then I have to put the sauce box on the table. I didn't want to do that. Next time, I'll order the spaghetti at home and have a better experience.

I'm hoping to try the rendang soon and take your advice on trying the fish dishes :)

    2. *scratch head some more* You could always tear off the cover of the paper box and lay the sauce box on it if you don't want the bottom to touch your table (or use a pc of tissue). You can then toss the pasta properly in the larger foil container...and still have a great experience in the office...hahaha! :D P/S: I'll be waiting to read about the fish dishes. ^_~
