Strawberry, Watercress and Siew Yoke Salad

After going crazy over kale, I have now found another new ingredient to grace my salads - watercress. I have read about watercress being used in salsa verde and salads and my immediate thought was the watercress that we use to cook pork rib soup. Alamak how to eat that in a salad?

Well, it is the same watercress but only the tender young shoots are used. I was delighted to find this young watercress at the salad section at Jaya Grocer.

Another ingredient that I enjoy is baby spinach. Yes, in the beginning I also thought it was the bayam that we used to chow choi.

And guess what else was available on the shelves?

Yes, these are back and I am glad to report that they were sweet and juicy.

So it was time to make a tasty salad with strawberries, watercress, baby spinach and ........ siew yoke! hee..hee...hee...

Chunks of crispy roasted pork on a bed of dressed greens and studded with sweet juicy sliced strawberries. That made for a very satisfying lunch and dinner.

The siew yoke was store bought obviously as I have not yet got the will to make my own. The thought of the skin blistering and sputtering pork fats in my oven simply discouraged me as I do not want to be spending hours cleaning my oven.

I actually bought the siew yoke the weekend prior from the Pearl Pork outlet at Taman Megah. They used to have an outlet (now closed) at Aeon where I got my supply  to make my first ever siew yoke kerabu

I kept the siew yoke in the freezer and the day before I made this salad, I took it to the fridge the night before to thaw. Then the next day, it was straight to the oven at 180C for 10 minutes. The siew yoke came out with crispy crunchy crackling. Mmmmm!!!

I enjoyed this salad a lot. Recipe? Simple only ............

  1. For me, salad will never be a satisfying meal because my tummy always feel "empty" even I've finished a big bowl of salad >_< But adding protein to salad definitely heighten up the level of satisfactory :P

  4. This is a surprise to hear that frozen siew yoke could still become crispy after heating up!
I must try this watercress vegetable as I have developed allergies to many vegetables including spinach besides brinjal, black mushrooms and many others.

I will be eating more salads this year for sure!

  5. I wonder how siew yoke tastes with strawberry. The fatty bits of the siew yoke, does it taste ok with strawberry?

    1. It tastes fantastic with strawberries - salty sweet combo and the freshness cuts through the fatty taste.

  6. Aha, I remember you making strawberry salads with siew yoke before but with mixed salad leaves. The siew yoke makes this a very "Malaysianised" salad (hmmm, I never thought of reheating siew yoke). I love to eat fresh watercress after tasting it for the first time at Bait with just a simple vinaigrette. I think watercress and baby spinach are only available from premium supermarkets like Jaya Grocer (don't think I can find them in Aeon).
