Devil On A Horseback

Devil on a Horseback. Like the name suggests, I immediately imagined a devil riding on a horse. That was years ago when I first came across this party food. Then I discovered that it is prunes wrapped in bacon. Prunes. Not my thing.

Then came the Christmas Party where I had my first encounter with these delicious devils. What a revelation. Bacon makes anything taste good. Even prunes.

But you are not likely to find prunes in my house though I may have baked with these dried fruits which are synonymous with laxatives.

One weekend while at Aeon for our grocery run, I spotted some dates on display. So I asked my partner if I could grab a box.

Medjool dates. I have seen many recipes using these dates and though I try not to buy things on impulse, I gave in. Honestly, these bacon wrapped dates were the furthest thing on my mind then.

Many days later, I took out a packet of bacon with the intention of baking them like what I saw here but I deviated from my plan. That happens a lot.

Medjool dates + bacon = Devil on a Horseback = OMG! I can't stop eating this! Yeah, it's good. So so so good. Really good. I made 9 and popped 5 into my mouth, one after another. This can't be good >.<

OK. Warning. No no, not warning that this is bad for your health or whatever. These dates that I bought were not pitted. Luckily I did not bite into the seed. So if you buy this particular packing, remove the pits first.

These bacon wrapped dates are phenomenal. So easy to make and yet so good to eat. Bookmark this for your next party.

  1. these make nice but expensive snacks. so easy to pop in the mouth. all will disappear in one seating. just puzzled why need to ask your partner if you could buy the dates? do you always ask him for all the grocery items you buy?

    1. Well, my partner pays for the grocery and when there is something out of the ordinary that I want, as a matter of courtesy, I ask if is it ok. Of course he will say yes :) I like to be financially considerate towards my partner.

    2. Yes of course when someone else pays for something one should always ask as a matter of courtesy. Don't know why it didn't cross my mind about this. Cos you seem to go grocery shopping alone in your previous posts so it didn't occur to me this point.

  2. I wonder why they call them devils on horseback. Well, you still did bake bacon...just in some other form...wuahahahaha! :D No need to use toothpicks to keep the bacon wrap in place when you baked them? Though you said you made 9, only a maximum of 8 are visible in all your photos, so I have to assume you popped one in your mouth even before the pics were taken...kekeke! ;) Try not to eat them in one sitting? #NotGoingToHappen

    1. I wonder the same too! LOL! Yes, I did bake the bacon after all hee..hee.. No need to use toothpicks because you can place the wrapped dates seam side down and the bacon will stay in place. Ooops you caught me! Yup, one disappeared into my mouth :D

  3. Thank goodness I've just used up my last slice of bacon for what I have in my blogpost today - otherwise I would be so tempted to try this...with my Yusof Taiyoob's dates. Gosh!!! I'm addicted to those, so very nice!

  10. Mum used to make them with prunes but I bet dates are equally as good. I like dates stuffed with nut butter (almond, peanut).Yum.

  12. This is interesting to see how bacons could wrap something else. Now I can only eat them by baking them by myself. The plate full of wraps would make my male friends laugh if I served them. Muahahahahaha

  13. Dates are aplenty now in the supermarket during this fasting month!

  14. Are those dates are on dry side or more moist type? I doubt this combination will be too dry if the dates are originally dry.
