Ayam Penyet, My Feelings Pun Penyet

I have been eyeing this outlet, Ayam Penyet AP (CLOSED), every time I walk past when I visit 1 Utama. Usually that would be on a Friday evening when my partner and I go for our dinner date. I don't know if this place is popular but compared to the other surrounding food outlets, it does not seem as busy.

I did not want to take my partner there as this is not his type of food. We did visit another (now closed) ayam penyet place at 1 Utama which was Waroeng Iga. I'm afraid the ayam penyet that I had was less than stellar. We were given the breasts (as they ran out of legs) and it was dry and nothing, even the sambal, was memorable.

One weekend when my partner was away, I went on one of my epic shopping sprees (will write about that later) and took the opportunity to visit Ayam Penyet AP.

It was early of course, just as my watch struck 11:00am (hah...hah...), I walked in to an empty restaurant. The other outlets nearby were already showing signs of life.

I took a look at the menu and noted that you either order the items separately (chicken, rice, sambal) or go for the set which comes with a fixed drink. You pay extra to upgrade for a soft drink.

I decided to go for separate items since I wanted neither the teh-o nor the soft drink.

So there you go, my Ayam Penyet AP, rice, sambal and the Soya Cendol. The reason I ordered the side sambal was because from experience, restaurants are usually quite stingy. You get something like a tiny dollop and are left wanting. But here, they are generous with the sambal.

I liked the sambal, it is kick ass hot, hot, hot. I only managed half of the side order of  sambal which was a generous helping.

The complimentary soup was nice (something like sup tulang) but it was a tad salty. So I did not finish it.

Now let's talk about the chicken. It did not look penyet (smashed) to me. It was basically a lightly spiced fried chicken topped with crispy bits of flour. In fact you can also order a side of this crispy bits.

The chicken was quite small and not very meaty. It did not taste like anything special and it was the sambal that got me through my meal. So you could conclude that I was disappointed.

The rice was dryish and clumpy, like overnight rice. I had to mix it with the sambal to make it go down easier.

The Soya Cincau was all right except that the cendol was hard, it was probably those frozen ones (is there such a thing?). So I just finished the drink.

My curiosity satisfied, I doubt if I would be back. I think Madam FHA punya Nasi Ayam Penyet lagi terangkat. Betul tak, Puan? heh..heh..heh....

If anyone knows of any good Ayam Penyet outlets in PJ, let me know.

  1. I have only tried once many many years ago and I have forgotten how it was. As I am indifference to both sambal and chicken I have not tried any since. I am also curious are there any must-eat ayam penyet around PJ.

    1. I don't suppose this type of food is to your liking. Maybe I should try cooking this at home. LOL!

    2. I like food like nasi kerabu, nasi ulam, ayam percik so I would not generalised it as type of food, just that it is that particular experience of having a ayam penyet that is not tasty prohibiting me to try another one.

  2. I have passed this quiet place many times and got turned away by the cold seats. Their waiters are the most aggressive to wave their menus to recruit diners. Now you have just confirmed that my instincts are absolutely correct. The reasons many restaurants in big malls could last a while because they often had to pay rental up front for nearly 12 months!!

    1. Yeah, notice them calling out to passerby. What I understand is that besides rental, they also have to pay a certain percentage of their takings as commission. Very hard to survive like that.

  3. I've not eaten ayam penyet in a specialised place serving just that but I've probably had eaten versions of it elsewhere before. What I'm curious to know is...is the chicken fried or grilled? As I've seen both versions served. So, when I googled ayam penyet, I came upon this thread and had a really good laugh...wakakakaka! :D

And yes, I've been served frozen cendol before.

  6. A plate of ayam penyet and then soya cendol. That would be very filling for me to finish all.

Frozen cendol? I think there is such. They should thaw or cook it well first.

  7. my family and most of my friends are also not fans of ayam penyet ... i'm ok with it, though yeah, i guess most of us prefer juicy chicken that you can really sink your teeth into, which isn't ayam penyet. i also like the sambals though! but i guess maybe we need to travel to east java to get the ideal ayam penyet! :)

  8. Usually it's the sambal that saves the day - I do think the ayam isn't anything to shout about, penyet or not. My missus would finish that whole bowl of extra sambal and lick it clean and all that came in the plate, of that I am sure...and anything that is spicy, she will say it is very good. Not otherwise.

    1. Yeah, the ayam was not outstanding at all. The sambal was too hot for me.

    1. I love fried ikan keli. Maybe that might persuade me to go back.

  12. In my opinion, I liked all that you feature...the spicier, the better! You are a very thorough 'restaurant critique' and you're doing such a great job...are you sure you're not doing this professionally?

  13. From my previous ayam penyet experience, the sambal chili was the most memorably item in the platter. I remember there is a ayam penyet restaurant at The Curve, have you tried before?

    1. No, I have not tried the one at The Curve. Looks like most people also comment that ayam penyet is not that memorable.
