Broccoli Bagna Cauda

Now who goes WAAAGRGGGGHH!!! at the mention of broccoli? I know. Those people who have been ordered by their doctors to eat steamed broccoli. Or kids who have been forced by their mums to swallow a broccoli floret or two.

If you have been eating steamed broccoli every other day, then I can understand why you rebel when you hear broccoli's name. But me, I love broccoli because I eat Broccoli Bagna Cauda. Well, not everyday of course.

It's roasted broccoli (yums!) tossed in a garlicky lemony anchovy dressing. Beats steamed broccoli any day I tell ya. If you are not familiar with anchovies, you can find these (in cans or bottles) at the supermarket at the section where they sell tuna and sardines (I get mine from Cold Storage).

When I first heard of roasted broccoli, I thought it was weird because at the time, I only know that broccoli is stir fried, boiled or steamed. But when I tried it, wow, I liked it so much. That was three years ago ago and I have since roasted many a broccoli head.

Try this if you have been looking at what else to do with broccoli.

Broccoli Bagna Cauda
Recipe source : Adapted from Nom Nom Paleo

Ingredients :
- 2 heads of broccoli, cut into florets. If the stems are tender, slice them up too.
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 bottle anchovy packed in olive oil (58g)
- 1 lemon, for juice and zest
- 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped

Method :
1. Toss broccoli with 1 tbsp olive oil and pour in a single layer on a lined baking tray.
2. Roast at 180C for about 20 minutes until the broccoli is tender and slightly charred (don't overcook).
3. While the broccoli is roasting, make the sauce.
4. Zest the lemon and set aside. You will need to squeeze for juice later.
5. Pour anchovy together with the oil into a saucepan.
6. Heat the pan and stir to break up the anchovies.
7. Remove from heat and add minced garlic, lemon zest and lemon juice. Stir to mix.
8. When the broccoli is done, transfer into a mixing bowl and pour the warm sauce into the bowl and toss. Serve immediately.

  1. I love broccoli but no, I wouldn't eat it all that often these days after seeing all the warnings online about the vegetable:

    1. STP, did you read the link you wrote above properly? The top part is a parody. It states there "**End of parody – the rest of this blog post is legit**". It then says "Organic broccoli is good for you. Conventional broccoli is good for you. There are thousands of other things you could worry about to do with your health rather than tiny doses of natural or synthetic pesticides".

So in a nutshell, Broccoli is still good for you.

  3. I love to eat steamed broccoli and I am sure roasted broccoli is just as tasty if not more but then steam is faster than roasting so will stick with steaming.

  5. Yes, I'm very familiar with bottled (or canned) anchovy fillets (I make one of simplest and tastiest pasta tossed with it!) and I've roasted cauliflower & broccoli before...but just never put the two of them together! ;) Well, until now...but those anchovies are real expensive (haven't bought in a while), more than RM15 now for that 58g bottle? Eating broccoli (or any vegetables for that matter) is certainly still a lot more healthier than eating any meat-based product, so thanks for the tip on what else to do with broccoli. I prefer roasted vegetables any day to plain old steam, boil or stir-fry, so much more flavour...kekeke! ^.^

    1. Glad to know you are familiar with anchovies! I like them in salad dressings and also use in when making kerabu. I must try it with pasta one day. Yup, very expensive and that's why I hardly buy them. Me too, I now favor roasted veggies!

  7. Broccoli is anti-oxident..or anti cancerous.. so it should be good for us... Never tried or seen this bottle anchovy packed in olive oil before... Must go Jaya Grocer to look see if I remember the next time I go there.. Otherwise I normally blanch them only... very bland as you said... :)

  8. Broccoli is always my top most favourite vegetable! In US, I learnt the 1001 ways to eat them steamed and tossed with any creamy salad or cheese sauce. Your idea is really good. Even with warnings about worms hiding inside, I think that's good with additional organic worms! Yums!

  11. I love broccoli. I encourage my kids to take too. Usually I boil my broccoli 1st then stir fry with carrot or mushroom and add oyster sauce.

This recipe sounds familiar. I wonder I tried it before or not.
